"Question and Answer" Session on Spine Devices: Spine Patients Submit Your Questions

    Hello Everyone,

Greg ("MDE") is an engineer for a spine device company and has offered to do a "Question and Answer" session on Spine / Orthopedic Devices.

I'll start compiling a list of questions and Greg & I will post the "Question and Answer" in the coming weeks. This is a great opportunity to have those head-scratching technical questions answered.

Please send your questions to me via:
    • Private Message (PM)
    • or by email at justin (at) spinepatientsociety (dot) org
    Thanks!
    -Justin

I'm a project engineer for a Spine device company. I spoke with Justin briefly about potentially doing a question and answer session on spine devices. We both think that it is beneficial for me to not say which company I work for, and for me to keep my responses technical and unbiased in nature.

I have access to many of the trade journals and shows as well as spending a significant amount of time researching many devices from many companies. I also work very closely with a number of the leading neuro and orthopedic surgeons from all over the world.

I do not know everything about every product, however I will do my best to research any question that you may have and provide you with the most comprehensive reply I can.

As a disclaimer, I'm an engineer and not a physician. None of my suggestions, or opinions should replace a trained medical professional, however I may suggest getting a second opinion from some of the surgeons I work directly with.

    Hi Justin,
I hope you will answer this question or forward to someone else but I think you could do the job.
I would like to know the difference between the XLIF and the XL TDR. i don't know if it is just different parts of the
country that call the same operations by different names or is it actually a different operation entirely. I notice a lot of the members' operation is the second one. i have some information on the first one.ie brochures and a DVD. This is not a private message so you can post the answer. Thank you, Carmen

I'm glad Carmen "bumped this up" with her question. I missed this sticky thread entirely somehow. Just occurred to me it was posted while we were in Connecticut for my father-in-law's funeral....probably why. Hopefully, more people will chime in with questions and we can take advantage of Greg's generous offer. Thanks in advance Greg!

XLIF if short for lateral fusion. XL TDR is short for lateral artificial disc replacement.

Thanks, Keano. :) BTW, Greg is working on the Q&A questions that have been submitted thus far. Thanks for your patience.

    Thanks Justin,
I think I was told that I was not a candidate for any ADR or artifical disc replacement. So I guess it is the XLIF. Thanks so much. It will take place sometime in June. I now have to decide which doctor. Most are neurosurgeans. Carmen
