Pioneer(R) Surgical Technology, Inc. Receives Prestigious Spine Technology Awards

Emerging Technologies in Cervical Spine Care Honored

MARQUETTE, Mich., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Pioneer Surgical Technology, Inc., a surgeon-driven leader in innovative medical devices, received 2 awards in the Cervical Spine Care category at the 2009 Spine Technology Awards gala held recently in San Francisco, California in conjunction with the North American Spine Society annual meeting.

Pioneer Surgical's next generation technologies receiving awards were the NuNec® Cervical Total Disc replacement (CTDR) device and nanOss(TM) Cervical, a machined hydroxyapatite (HA) interbody spacer. These products were among 26 new and emerging technologies honored for their likelihood to advance cost-effective care of patients with spine problems.

According to Pioneer's Chief Marketing Officer, Tom McLeer, "We are delighted over the positive recognition these advanced technologies are receiving from leading industry analysts, even though these products may be several years away from commercial availability in the United States."

The awards are presented annually by Orthopedics This Week, the most widely read publication in the Orthopaedic industry. According to OTW Publisher, Robin Young, the Spine Technology Awards bring increased recognition to innovative spine surgery products and their inventors. Pioneer's signature articulating P3(TM) Technology-Pioneer PEEK-on-PEEK - is the heart of the NuNec design. The nanOss Cervical cage, using nanotechnology, is intended to provide structural stability while fusion occurs.

A Michigan company. We need all the help we can get. We lost and continue to lose jobs in the manufacturing sector. Creative ideas and new companies are needed to get us out of the pits.

C4-5: Mild disc height loss with central annular fissure. Small broad-based left paracentral disc protrusion. Moderate central canal stenosis-the disc protrusion abuts and mildly flattens the left ventral surface of the spinal canal.

C5-6: Disc desiccation with mild height loss.Diffuse discosteophyte bulge and uncovertebral joint hypertrophy, moderate central canal stenosis- Severe neuroforaminal stenosis bilaterally, right greater than left

Looking closely at the superior and inferior surfaces of this device, I'm speculating that its value add is a very strong resistance to migration. Maybe a stronger resistance than any of the other cervical artificial discs out there? Another value add (if the claim is true) is no artifact on an MRI/CT.

I don't see any claims by the company or the first six links from a Google search about 1)absorbing axial compression, or 2)allowing a sheering movement of adjacent vertebral bodies on the axial plane; (both strengths of the M6, and the latter also a strength of the Mobi-C).

I've found no engineering data on this device, but from the precious little I've found would speculate that its another ball and socket design (like the Prestige and ProDisc-C) that is designed to solve the problems of device migration and MRI/CT artifact. If so, I hope it succeeds on both counts.
