Hey Greg,
I had a 2-level lumbar ProDisc (L4/L5 & L5/L6) in 11/2003 with Dr. Bertagnoli and the DSS from Paradigm Spine at L4 in 2009 also with Dr. Bertagnoli.
Typically with a 2-level artificial disc replacement surgery, it is done by itself. Instrumentation can be added later for more support, but this inherently limits some of the theoretic advantages of ADR (continued movement of the spine, decreased incidence of adjacent level degeneration, etc.). BTW, most Spine Patients don't have artificial discs and dynamic stabilization devices placed at the same time. Of course, there are complex pathologies that requires such intervention initially. However, dynamic stabilization devices are usually subsequently placed if the patient's spine warrants such intervention.
I hope this helps. If you need a better explanation, just let me know...I gotta run right now.![]()
