Disclosure: I have no financial relationships with any surgeons, spine clinics, device manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, etc. -- the SPS Board of Directors serve without compensation.
And there is always "Total Disc Arthroplasty" to add to the confusion.
As Justin mentioned, they're all synonymous:
Artifical Disc Replacement
Total Disc Replacement
Total Disc Arthroplasty
There is a mad man in San Francisco named Slackwater who used to always post "ADR/TDR" every time he needed to refer to the procedure. It cracked me up. I wish that guy would re-surface.
If those aren't enough there are also varying terms for the disc's themselves: artificial discs, disc prosthesis and the most awkward I've heard so far: "spine arthroplasty device".
Personally, my favorite is the term Job13 once used: "The spaceship parked in my L4/L5"![]()

Spine Noob
April 2007 - Injured one cervical C6/C7 and one lumber L5/S1 in same accident
No major treatments so far aside from exercising and core strengthening best I can.
Never, ever, ever, give up.
If I'm not mistaken, I think the different terminology was used in marketing of the different disc manufacturers. The medical term is arthroplasty. If memory serves, Charite coined ADR and Synthes used TDR in their initial marketing materials.
