Hi Caitlin,
I was lucky that my surgeon was open to requests like the epidural...not all would be. I've been shot down by most surgeons for questioning my options...egos are fragile
I had a discogram last August and was given a cocktail of medications to reduce the pain. The surgeon (not the one who did my main surgery) was doing another procedure as well, which involved injecting my discs twice. It was expected to cause a great deal of pain without meds.
The cocktail they gave me had no effect at all...I've never been in such agony and they would/could not give me anything else for pain because of the amount I already had in my system. All of this is to say that if you have pain control issues similar to that, the epidural could be an extremely good idea.
Hopefully you have a surgeon who is flexible, or you can find a way to gently convince him![]()

Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things. Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!
