I have no idea which side they injected during my discograms, either way it reproduced 10/10 pain. I know Dr. Bitan is in that area, but not sure if he does his own discograms. He has a great reputation for spine surgery though.

Wow i am in a lot of pain in my back right now. The lidocaine has worn off and this is painful. I had a question for everyone on this forum. My doctor wants to perform another discogram and I was wondering is it normal for the doctor to inject the side of the disc that is not in pain to reproduce the pain site? When i had my first discogram, the doctor injected the right side of my disc when my problems are all on the left? Also, if anyone is in the nyc area can you recommend a good doctor who does the discograms well? I have been researching but its tough to find a good doctor who performs these procedures.
thanks

Mark, my understanding is that it doesn't matter which side of the disc is injected. When a disc with significant pathology is "pressurized," the patient should feel pain. Discs with annular tears do not hold a lot of pressure compared to healthy discs; thus, pain at low pressures results from exposure of pain receptors in the outer annulus to the dye used. Pain at high pressures typically results from mechanical stimulation of the annulus.
Personally, I don't know any docs that do discography in NYC. However, I am sure there are countless docs that are very qualified. Hopefully, someone with experience in NYC will chime in soon.

This is not important. When discography is performed, needle is placed in center of your disc. Sometimes due to abnormal anatomy, doctors can't reach your disc space from left side, so they choose right, or opposite. Anyway, as I already said, side is not important for this procedure.
As far as I know, dr. Daniel Choy is doing discography in NYC.
I just happened to come across this post (should be doing homework but looking for reasons to not do it) so sorry for the delay.
Dr. Bitan does not do discograms. He will send you to one of his associates to have the testing done. When I told him that the doctor that I had in Westchester did the discograms himself, he was surprised.
If you need more info on Dr. Bitan, PM me. I'll be more than happy to help!
