The abstract above states;
Results: The actual cost of implants at our institution for ASF/PSF, ASF, TLIF, and disc replacement were similar when rhBMP-2 was not included in the calculations. Total hospital costs for ASF/PSF were significantly higher than for TLIF, ASF, or disc replacement.When is says rhBMP-2 was not included in the calculations, did this reduce the cost or increase the cost? I read elsewhere that using rhBMP-2 can increase the initial cost of surgery, but reduce total cost over time by reducing the re-operation rate. I intend to include ADR/Fusion cost comparison data in my insurance appeal, and don't have access to the full text, so I need some Eh-Juh-Katen.
Conclusions: The hospital cost of disc replacement surgery is similar to TLIF and ASF (when rhBMP-2 cost is excluded) and is significantly less expensive than ASF/PSF.Direction toward any other cost comparison studies would be good too.
