"Seemingly simple things like talking to people at eye level and reaching things on shelves can be a huge drawback for those in wheelchairs. Sitting in a wheelchair for extended periods can also lead to the increased risk of certain infections and blood circulation problems. A robotic exoskeleton called REX puts wheelchair users back on their feet, enabling a person to stand, walk and go up and down stairs and slopes."

Re: REX robotic exoskeleton gets wheelchair users back on their feet That is really cool. I wonder if they couldn't use that for physical therapy teaching people to walk. My niece, who's 9 years old and severely disabled, has this thing that makes her stand straight and bear weight on her legs, so she gets used to being upright. In just the last couple of months she has started to do the walking motion when held under her arms and moved forward (like you would do with a baby). Seems like something like this she could be put in and have the motion done, so it becomes natural for her and helps her learn the motions.
31 years old-
1/06- In wreck with 18 wheeler at 25 years old; 6/06- Head on collision on Interstate, both wrecks other drivers fault. Numerous MRI's, PT, chiropractic, acupuncture, TENS therapy, massage therapy, facet injections, epidural injections, Nerve study, Discogram, confirms pain in L4/5, IDET, decompression, Bi-lateral neurotomy L3/4/5, denied by insurance twice, in Active L clinical trial, had surgery March 17, 2009 in Miami, FL- received Active L disc at 29 years old. Pain and medication free as of October 2010!
Mommy to Emma- 8 years, Ava- 5.5 years & had baby Eli after ADR, via c-section on March 25, 2011, completely pain free still!
Re: REX robotic exoskeleton gets wheelchair users back on their feet Kathy, I'm sure Mr. Rex does not come cheap, but I would suspect the makers of him have a whole host of uses in play and/or on the drawing board, including physical therapy for conditions like your niece.....which, by the way, I am very sorry to hear.

Re: REX robotic exoskeleton gets wheelchair users back on their feet Oh, I'm sure it's outrageously expensive and probably would not be ready in time for her, but those to follow. You know if the therapy places would buy them and let them use them then. She has been in physical, occupational and speech therapy since birth and several times a week. She makes progress, it is just very slow (she is 9 years old and developmentally like a 6 or 7 month old). She was born with a rare chromosome deletion which causes her entire body to 'malfunction' (similar to down syndrome, they have an extra chromosome, she is missing part of a chromosome). I really think she will walk one day, may be 10 years from now, but I think she will.Originally Posted by Cindylou

Riding 4 wheeler and playing basketball. Collide with guy in mid air and I hit concrete on one leg and then fall down. Wake up in pain cant move for few hours, fine few days later. Back never the same.
dec 2007 horseplaying with father, contained l5-s1 disc herniation with sciata on right leg, traction helps and time, pain free, diagnosed ddd l4/l5 and l5/s1

April 2007 - Injured one cervical C6/C7 and one lumber L5/S1 in same accident
No major treatments so far aside from exercising and core strengthening best I can.
Never, ever, ever, give up.
