Thanks so much Marti. Your post op results are indeed impressive! It is so good to learn of yet another spectacular surgeon in the world that we can trust...word of mouth is the best reference I found.

Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things . Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!

    Katie,

I just wanted to add that my consults with Nick Boeree were absolutely top-notch. Of the dozen or so surgeons I spoke to prior to my ACDF. he was one of the most thorough and impressive in terms of his analysis of my condition and recommendations. I thought the consult fee (roughly $300 or so at the time) was worth every penny. He was also incredibly thorough in his responses to some of my follow-up email questions. I was very strongly considering going to the UK to have surgery with him, but decided against it when other surgeons (including TBI) told me that they did not think I was a good candidate for ADR.

I'm not sure how much this helps because I didn't actually have an experience with the doctor or hospital, but I did feel that I would have been in very competent and caring hands had I ultimately decided to go that route.

Diagnosed 6 years ago (at age 30) with multi-level DDD of the C-spine
Have had numerous epidurals, nerve root injections, PT, etc.
Severe stenosis and cord compression at C5-6 and C6-7 -- also have herniations and stenosis at levels above
After much deliberation, decided to have a two-level fusion (5/6 and 6/7) on 1/25/11
Recovery has been rough so far, but trying to stay positive

    Marti,

I saw you on TV campaigning for the FDA to improve and speed up its process to allow for more ADRs especially M6 to be allowed in U.S. Thank you very much. It is great that you took this up as a good cause. I started to write that the U.S. doctors - M.D.s took the Hippocratic Oath too seriously (paraphrased as) if you can't help a sick person at least do not harm them. However, I looked up the Hippocratic Oath and few U.S. med. schools make doctors take the Hippocratic Oath anymore so that can't be the problem. The suing of doctors for medical malpractice is a problem though. Doctors have to have medical liability insurance and the cost in many situations is upwards of $100,000 per year. I suspect spine surgeons and others who do spine surgery pay more than that. Plus if they are sued many times, their reputation is damaged permantently. I'm sure there are very ligitimate reasons to sue but many are very frivolous and encouraged by unethical lawyers. I'm hoping the M6 will soon be approved by the FDA and used by U.S. doctors.
    Diagnosis:
    Degenerative disc disease throughout spine
Generalized disc bulging with mild narrowing of thecal sac in L2-L3, L3-L4, L4-L5, L5-S1.
    Moderate spinal stenosis L4-L5
    Foraminal narrowing
    Recent compression Fx at T10,T11.
    Treatment:
    Spinal decompression 2007
Cortisone injection in lower back in 2010
    Relieved of pain for now
    Hope for ADR

I'm afraid to say that this will not happen to a very long time. Synthes has a patent on the keels Spinal Kinetics uses on the M6. Both manufactures have been in litigation since 2007..

i took the Hippocratic Oath!!! i often remind myself of that and a few other of my philosophies when i find myself in a situation where i'm not sure what to do... "first do no harm", "the only thing that matters when you are in a room with the patient is THAT PATIENT", "what would i want for MY sister/mom/grandma", "it's better to treat an addict than to deny someone in pain proper treatment". just a few of my guiding principles...

interesting speedyralph, someone else had intimated that the main reason the M6 isn't coming here anytime soon was a patent issue. so darn frustrating for those of us who believe and/or have been told that a prodisc is not a good disc for them... and whose insurance companies won't cover fusion for DDD.

as much as it scares me... I am very, very seriously considering an M6L with Dr Clavel or Mr Boeree. so many factors at work, i'll post a new update when i have the last of my data - LTT metal allergy testing... maybe end of next week?

thanks for the info speedy... sure is frustrating that patent law is complicating my life so much.

I may have to pretty much drop my personal injury suit if I decide to go overseas, since my surgeon wouldn't be available to testify. I think it's a bunch of BS since no surgeon can testify to causality - only my pain dr and PT knew me and my symptoms before and after... but alas... life.

Thumbs Up Re: Dr. Boeree: Feedback and Information Please

I couldn't speak more highly of Nick Boeree. My own experience and surgical outcome thread (including recent one year update) is at the following link:
Relief After Cervical ADR C5-6 & C6-7 with Spinal Kinetics M6-C Artifical Disc / Nick Boeree, Nuffield Wessex

A number of others can be found as links through the M6 Group:
    http://www.spinepatientsociety.org/forum/groups/m6ers/

I was helped so much by the patients on this site - so if I can help in any way, don't hesitate to ask.

    Best regards,
    Tyler

Aug-27-2010: 2-level ADR with Nick Boeree (Nuffield-Wessex Hospital, Eastleigh, UK) using Spinal Kinetics M6-C
Completely off of pain meds since a few days post-op and symptom-free; have returned to cycling, climbing and all other activities (but staying off the motorcycle)

Folks, I have just popped in from the UK board to help with this subject and surgeon. We call our "Senior Surgeons Mr not Dr and Mr Boeree is in the top 10 worldwide as far as ADR and knowledge of this subject so please have every confidence in him and his surgeries in the UK.

I am a member here but run the UK spineboard where more information is about him under "Hospitals and Surgeons who do ADR" plus many patient stories about his surgeries you can read. Sorry Justin not Hi Jacking this thread.
