Dr. Pimenta is a very experienced, compassionate, innovative surgeon who not only helps many of patients, but is world-renowned to many surgeons. I was fortunate enough to meet him (thanks to Mark-Perth), and clearly consider Dr. Pimenta as one of the top individuals I have ever met.

It was a sincere honor to meet him. My only regret is that my insurance would not let him perform on me, even in the US. According to Mark, Dr. Pimenta performs surgery in the US, Tijuana, and of course Brazil.

I am looking forward to speaking with Dr. Pimenta in the near future. I can't thank you enough for providing the contact information about him. It has opened one more door for me, when I thought they were all closing again.

He has been unbelievably encouraging and helpful, offering several options for me, even with all my metal allergies. I've also been given the option of traveling to almost all of the hospitals where he operates, and we are just checking out which would be most cost effective. It feels like there is hope once again, since we have made no headway with my Canadian surgeon so far. There doesn't seem to be any new devices available here in Canada for at least another two years.

So hearing of his reputation helps build my confidence that I am doing the right thing. The idea of flying halfway around the world seems very frightening, especially when I will not have any backup here at home if anything goes wrong. I can use all the rave reviews I can get Thanks again for all your help. (And to others who spoke of Dr. P earlier as well, but at the time I was headed in other directions).
Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things . Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!

On the back row from the left is
Dr Leonardo Oliveira or Leo(research Dr, I believe a specialist in BMP/ fusions, Biomedico)
Dr Thomas Schaffa (access/ vascular surgeon)
Dr Etevaldo Coutinho (assistant spine surgeon)
Dr Luiz Pimenta (Neurosurgeon/ minimally invasive spine surgeon)
    Rafael Amaral (Office manager)
I think the last man on the far right is Dr Rodrigo Amaral (assistant surgeon)

There is also another research doctor named Henrique or Henri who isnt in the picture.

The ladies are the office staff & scrub nurses. Sorry I dont know all there names.

Thanks for this info!!! I feel proud and happy to see Dr. Pimenta's info here. I'm Brazilian and although I have always done all my health follow ups in Brazil and really believing the quality of the Brazilian health system with several first class MD's , I wasn't aware of Dr. Pimenta. I will definitely contact the clinic!

Small world, isn't it! Welcome to our forum, and I hope the problem that brings you here is not too severe.

I am looking forward to meeting Dr. Pimenta soon and I hope you have the pleasure as well.

    Hi Katie

Hopefully he can be of some help to U. Im sure he will.

The surgery in Brazil is definately in its own class. U will also find that everything thats available elsewhere is also available there as well but often years before elsewhere. It all comes down to whether they feel its good enough to put in some1.
The XL TDR is the prime example. They are just starting FDA trials but Dr P has been puting them in for a while now. I have a few papers that he has done on them dating back to 2006 so he is atleast 4 yrs ahead there.
I would definately recommend that if U do have surgery with him to travel to Sao Paulo as that is his regular team and hospital. I think that would be worth it.

I was really amazed myself at the medical treatment there. It definately was great and the care given was amazing by all the doctors and nurses.

His office is just next to the Paraiso metro stop at the bottom of Paulista ave so was very easy to find.
Knowing the language will make it so much easier as well for U but that was something that they went out of there way to help me with luckily.

    Best of luck

    Mark

Heres a link to the hospital that Dr Pimenta operates from in Brasil

    :::Hospital Santa Rita:::

Its not in english unfortunately but there are pictures on there that may be of help.

There is no pictures of the room that I was in but it was not the suite but was a large private room with its own shower/toilet.

Also if you look up the hospital location on Google maps it has the wrong name for the hospital. This did give me concerns but its google's mistake.
They have it as hospital Amico but that is incorrect.

The hospital is on Rue Cubatao in Vila Mariana.
