I have a surgery date with Nick Boeree on August 24 to replace cervical discs from C 5-C 7. The hospital sent me a list of hotels, without any further recommendations. I would very much appreciate hotel recommendations from anyone who has had surgery at Nuffield Wessex Hospital. Mr Boeree's assistant, Jo Haley, also told me I can stay at the hospital. I don't think I would want to do that if the hospital is like those here in the States, so noisy and uncomfortable. Based on the experience of other members out there, are there reasons why it would be better to stay before or after the surgery at the hospital versus a hotel?

Diagnosed in February, 2011, with "moderately-severe to severe" stenosis at C 5-6 and C 6-7
I have nerve root compression of C-6 and C-7
Local surgeons have advised I will require a two-level ADCF at some point, but don't want to do it now because of lack of spinal cord compression symptoms.

I'm traveling alone. Friends offered to accompany me, but when we started looking at plane fare we decided the cost of flying someone with me added more stress than the thought of going alone! I haven't researched much about the tourist attractions yet, except for Winchester Cathedral. I plan to go a few days early so I can relax and look around. I thought maybe a hotel in Winchester would be good for those days, then check into the hospital the night before surgery.
I am mostly wondering if I should stay at the hospital after the surgery. I don't have pain now, mostly other radiculopathy symptoms. I am worried about pain after the surgery, and if I'd be better off just staying at the hospital until I depart from the UK. Surgery is on Wednesday, departure on the following Monday. It appears that there aren't any hotels within easy walking distance of the hospital, but I am not sure.
Advice about local sight-seeing is very welcome! Thanks for your response!

Portsmouth is pretty close and has some good naval history in the dockyards. Gunwharf keys have some reasonable hotels and an assortment if restaurants.
botley park is near Eastleigh is a taxi ride from the hospital but is my hubbies fav in the area. if you are on your own staying in the hospital a little longer might be an idea.
