I am up in Shetland so on the same latitude as Anchorage.
We have 24/7 daylight at the moment. THe sun does go down but you could still read a book outside at midnight and the sun is blazing by 3am!
Winters are harsh too. Very little light - daylight at 10am and dark by 3pm.
The Northern Lights or Merrie Dancers (local name) are superb and magical too.

I've been to Alaska and we did see the Northern Lights. Quite amazing. We have actually seen a little of them down here in Mid-America occasionally when the night weather is just right. However, I can't take the cold winters up north or even here. We're heading to southern Texas next winter.

Frances, I never thought of those on your side of the world enjoying the lights tooWhat a wonderful photo op that would be...the lights with your ponies in the foreground...hint, hint.
ajj, that sounds like a wonderful idea if it could work. Too bad this artist is starving too much to take advantage of that retreat
Actually, what if you listed it for rent/lease up here in Canada? There was a big story on the news last night about people from Alberta going to California and buying up $1 million homes as vacation homes. Our economy is just so good, our dollar so strong, and the real estate down there low enough to allow this to happen. It would be so great if you could make lemonade from this situation. I don't think it would matter if it was used winter or summer...we are pretty tough up here
Good and bad parts to this thread...like all parts of our lives.
Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things. Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!
We have thought about the rental idea. Seems overwhelming at the moment, you know? The marketing, taking all our clothes out of dresser drawers and closets so they're empty for renters, buying cheaper plates etc, the "to do" list of it all.....it just overwhelms me, honestly.....I'm embarrassed to admit.![]()

Awww CL, we aren't trying to stress you out more. I can't imagine putting one more thing on my plate without cracking, so I know what you mean. I can't stand the thought of someone coming to visit right now, let alone moving in! Our place is so upside down it's scary, and I don't seem to have time or energy to fix it.
Things will work out for you with this...it is too important not to. It's not unlike getting our back issues sorted out, no?We just hang on till something good happens. I take turns being like your hubby about things that upset me, and being like you and trying to put them in order. I never know which of me will get out of bed some days
