Even celeb's aren't immune to dodgy spines interrupting their lives but I guess Bono's having top notch treatment with no expense spared! Hope nobody was going to any of his US concert dates.

what type of surgery did he have? micro disc?
C4-5: Mild disc height loss with central annular fissure. Small broad-based left paracentral disc protrusion. Moderate central canal stenosis-the disc protrusion abuts and mildly flattens the left ventral surface of the spinal canal.

C5-6: Disc desiccation with mild height loss.Diffuse discosteophyte bulge and uncovertebral joint hypertrophy, moderate central canal stenosis- Severe neuroforaminal stenosis bilaterally, right greater than left

Yes, celebrities are people too lol. Phil Jackson has fusion of l5-s1 from the 70's and still played in the nba for a few years after, which I think is absolutely nuts lol. Larry Bird as fusion of l5-s1 after his playing days. So while I am a sports fan and used to be mad at mom for not letting me play football in highschool, I am very thankful now she did not lol, especially if my back is genetically bad idk. I do not intend on letting my kids play any sports after jr high and never will allow football. Is having "fun" or making it into the pros worth pain later in life? I would say no.
Riding 4 wheeler and playing basketball. Collide with guy in mid air and I hit concrete on one leg and then fall down. Wake up in pain cant move for few hours, fine few days later. Back never the same.

dec 2007 horseplaying with father, contained l5-s1 disc herniation with sciata on right leg, traction helps and time, pain free, diagnosed ddd l4/l5 and l5/s1

I'm probably the opposite, I encouraged my daughters to do lots of sports growing up(even full contact ones). I wanted them to as much exercise as possible and their backs have strong supporting muscles which helps ward off any future problems. their sporting achievements have been a great part of their growing up.

Bono suffered severe compression of the sciatic nerve. There was a serious tear in the ligament and a herniated disc. His surgery was with Professor Tonn at Munich's LMU University Hospital.

I guess on the exercise front it's best to strike a balance. I'm all for promoting physical activity in children but there are many types of exercise that are more spine friendly. If DDD runs in the family it maybe wise to encourage youngsters to do minimal or non impact activities.

I traced my biological family to rule out any hereditary problems and there aren't any. I'm just a fluke! one daughter flies on the military so has passed extensive medical tests which is good.

I'm with Alison on this one....I highly encouraged physical activity and sports in all 3 of my sons while they were growing up. It helped shape who they are today. My middle son is an elite athlete who just finished his 3rd Half Ironman last month, preparing for his first full Ironman this September in Madison Wisconsin. We will be there with bells on, cheering him on! My oldest son is a major rock climber who has "guns" like you wouldn't believe! haha! My youngest was a swimmer in high school and the first couple years of college. (didn't like the coach in college and dropped out) He's also a wilderness backpacker. This summer, just after his college graduation, he took a summer job as a canoe outfitter at a remote lodge way up in the northwoods on the Gunflint Trail. Their physical activity and prowess is a huge part of who they are today. ps: I can't wait to get my little granddaughter out on the slopes in another year or two! hehe

CL, it sounds like you have some slackers! Full Ironman's are insane. I have a friend that does them.

When we have kids and they are old enough to play "sports," I'm going to encourage them to play full-contact chess and piano.
