    Default Dang. Upended myself AGAIN

I'm sitting here cursing my stupidity and feeling a bit sorry for myself at the same time

We have avoided almost all winter-like weather up till yesterday, when we had freezing rain at dawn. It stayed around the freezing point most of the day, and I hadn't stepped outside my door at all, just going back and forth to the barn which is connected to the house via a breezeway.

I went to step outside the door to say goodbye to my horseshoer who just finished his work, and I then remember laying on the thresh hold, unable to move. I don't recall going down, but I obviously slipped on some ice on the step and banged my temple on the sill. The back of my right hand is banged up like road rash and my upper rt. thigh is very sore and hard, with an orange-sized lump underneath but no bruising. Go figure.

My farrier was still in the truck doing up the invoice and didn't see me for a few minutes, and thankfully was able to help me up as I couldn't do it on my own. He didn't want to leave me, but after a few minutes I put on my big-girl pants and assured him I was going to live

You know what the great thing was? My first thought wasn't about my back! I have a few twinges that PT will take care of next week, but there was no sudden pain there like when I fell a couple of months after surgery (on the stairs in the dark over my dog... )

If I could just get rid of this splitting headache I'll be good...and I'm still not able to lie on either side at night, so the bruise really isn't an issue And yes I called the doctor about the bump on the head, and the staff said I was fine as long as I didn't start projectile vomiting in the next twenty-four hours

So I just thought that I'd let everyone know that there does come a point after surgery when your back doesn't overwhelm your thought process when a boo-boo happens

Sorry to hear about your fall but glad you're not hurt too badly. We've had a little "frost-on-the-pumpkin" and it doesn't take much to make a wooden deck slick. I take my dog out early and have to remind myself that it could have frosted overnight and I need to step lightly. We warm up in the day to 40 - 60 F and it's hard to remember that the next morning it could have frosted. Also, turning on lights is important

Yes, even our dog was slipping on the back deck this morning! I bought cleats for my boots last year and never even thought of them (till now). It didn't help that the 'front step' is a big piece of rock that seems to hold the ice more than a regular step would. Off to invest in some salt

Hope your headache is better soon.

I got water "stuck" in my ears swimming yesterday so have spent the day with nasty, painful ears. Hoping they pop soon.

So glad that you are okay, sounds like a pretty bad fall. I don't remember exactly when I fell after surgery, but I busted hard on the concrete, in front of a ton of people (I was more embarrassed than hurt). I'd be in big trouble if we had ice on a regular basis, it happens here, but not often thankfully. Hope the headache goes away soon.

Katie, glad you're ok honey. Winter has definitely arrived here.....with all the snow and ice to go with it. I took my first fall of the season too, with our first 9" snowfall a couple weeks back. My collarbone still hurts. Then I remembered the snow-trax I had purchased and don't leave the house without them. They're amazing. Heal up and I hope your headache has dissipated by now too. Cindylou

Thanks guys. Headache is still here, and now the hip is getting very pretty and colourful And growing to the size of a big grapefruit...

Cindylou, I guess I missed your earlier posts about you getting hurt too. Yours sounds worse than mine, and I'm sorry you are still suffering from it. Those snow-trax are awesome, but I probably wouldn't have put them on even if I'd remembered them. I was only going a couple of steps.....famous last words....

Kathy, that sounds pretty ouchy too. Last time I fell on cement, just after moving here, I broke my ankle and tore a ligament. It was in the middle of construction and the contractors had to take orders from me from the bedside I'd hobble to the window and check out the progress then 'advise' them on further work from across the room. (We were building a barn/garage, just before life went to heck in a handbasket and my back dissolved) Those were the days

Alison, have you tried tipping your head sideways and smacking it? That has helped me break the surface tension and let the water drain, if that is the scientific reason for why it is stuck, LOL! I'm not a water lover, and really didn't start putting my head under in the pool till last summer, when hubby the life guard type sort of shamed me into it. Still don't like it, but can add it to my resume now

I hope you are better now, that was quite a fall. That is remarkable that your back was not your first concern. Thanks for sharing-- I look forward to the day that my bad back isn't always on my mind.

I normally manage to clear it that way post swim but not this time. I tried a kill or cure trick last night and put my ears into the bath water to add more water and see if all would clear but to no avail.

Swimming with your head under water lets you get a level body position without pulling on the lumbar area. This is an unwanted side effect! I wear a tight swimming hat which normally keeps the water out of my ears but it must be loosing its grippyness. I'm leading worship at church this morning and am struggling to hear myself sing as I'm doing my warm ups, might keep a bit away from the microphone to save people from any bum notes.

I'm looking at getting something to put on my shoes so I don't fall, the thought of a big fall is terrifying though my surgeon says that the rods should hold ok!

    Hope your headache lessens today.
