Default Dr. Oz show and Chronic Pain

Yesterday my hubby called me in to watch the Dr. Oz show, an American talk show on in the afternoons for those who aren't from the US. Here is the episode # The Dr. Oz Show (Ep. 3013) 09/27/11 "Why Your Doctor Thinks You're Crazy! Is Your Chronic Pain a Disease?"

    Chronic pain and possible cures.

He discusses how it is now starting to be treated as a disease of the brain, and how pain management is starting to change. Hopefully you can find it by going to his site or maybe finding it on YouTube.

He spoke to an audience member whose doctor told her to have more sex with her husband, that it would relieve the pain. Interestingly, I was defeated in my fight with our provincial government insurance for out of country funding because they used an Ontario spine surgeon as a consultant, one who wrote several books on the subject. He also said that sex would fix most problems, and what the heck, it would only hurt for a few minutes.......

He also debunked using ice, heat and TENS machines as pain relievers. He was paid thousands of dollars to write a two page letter dismissing my request for surgery, especially an ADR. So here's an author to stay away from... Dr. Hamilton Hall. But I digress

This episode of Dr. Oz is very good, and well worth watching, imho. You may or may not like his other ideas, but this one has merit. Since links often don't work, I won't bother posting one, but hope Google search is your friend on this
Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things . Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!

Thanks for the info. I saw the case histories bit but didn't see the bit about sex therapy as a pain reliever . I also watched the one about the 3 M's - medication, movement & meals. When you're in significant pain it's all too easy to reach for comfort foods with refined sugars which are regarded as pro-inflammatory & not the healthier stuff like fish & beans which are anti-inflammatory.

I watched it too and thought it was very good. Oh and I thought the sex for relief was hilarious.... obviously whoever said that had never experienced back pain. I thought it was funny when Dr. Oz asked her if she was married to the Dr. who suggested that. He did have a lot of good information on it.

Ruth- I so agree on the eating right. I am a sugar addict and love junk food. Now that I've been busting my rear losing baby weight, I have been eating right and it has made a huge difference in my energy levels and how I feel.

I too have a really sweet tooth. Diabetes runs on both sides of my family so I try to rein it in but I'm a chocaholic at heart. I watched the programme pieces off the Dr Oz website but it only showed you sections of it. Did you watch it somewhere else?

It's a local show for us, comes on everyday and I just so happened to be home when it was on. I'm not sure if they You Tube their shows or not, but you might try finding it there.

It's not up on You tube yet. I think I got most of the gist of it on the Dr Oz website. Good luck with your weight loss. You sound as though you're on the right track.

P.S. I bet baby Eli keeps you on the go!
