What can I say? I'm 1/2 Italian. There are a few things I say in German that I can't even begin to think of how to spell. My mom & cousin (yup 1/2 German as well) taught me a few of the "bad" German words.

I'm sure I have more. Just can't think of them at the moment....lol!

One of mine has always been "fake it till you make it." Been around a long time, but when I first heard it about 25 years ago, we were using it in our behavioral model for severely dysfunctional children, who had been removed from their home...for various reasons: Abuse by the parents, a child's risk to self or others, abandonment, firesetters, etc., etc. And the group homes and foster homes would implement this saying, (along with alot of other modalities, of course) and model it for the kids. It was amazing to watch the transformation of a substantial amount of children, earning points for being kind, setting the table, answering the door appropriately, etc., as they were in a highly structured, stable environment.
I was a bit of a rare bird back then who was NOT a fan of continually letting these kids go back to their natural home, say after a parent got rid of the abuser or took parenting classes, whatever. Because I saw so much failure when they returned. (letting the abuser come back home alot; quitting the parenting classes; and the list goes on...) I know alot of other social workers would disagree with me on this philosophy. The state has always been so big on trying to reunite kids with their parents. But after they try and try and try to reunite these poor kids and all their multiple placements in between, finally they say: terminate the parents' rights, and by this time, the poor kid is 8 or 9 or 10 or 14 even, and highly unadoptable. I always felt that being a parent was a gift, not a "right," and you get 1 shot at being a great parent to a kid. No poor innocent child ever asked to be born into such dysfunction. You screw up, then my forgiving nature says you get 1 redo. Period. If you screw that up, bam, terminate the parents' rights, the child is still very young, maybe even still a toddler, and very adoptable still. And gets a shot at a great life with a great family. The sicko parent may go on to have more children, poor kids, but at least some of those kids can have a fighting chance. Ok, off and clearly,

CL- I couldn't agree more with you. I have seen one of my friends take in her deceased brothers children, to only have them returned to the sorry mother. She finally said, enough, we will take all of them when the mom's rights are terminated; but we are not going to participate in this yo-yo'ing of them back and forth. So sad.
