Default Feeling like an abused dog....

I feel like dog poopie This medication switch is killing me. My entire body aches, I'm stiff and my tummy hurts. The new medication, Naprelan 1000mg/day, just isn't cutting it. I tried taking Ibuprofen OTC 800mg, it helped a little but not much. I finally broke down an hour ago and took a Vicodin (I went 26 hours without one). I'm having a why me? day. I swear I have the crappiest luck in the world. So my luck to be the one who has adhesions post-surgery. I am so having one of those days where I feel like the world is crumbling around me and that it will never get better. The icing on the cake, mother nature is visiting me (not helping with the crazy emotions). I know I am being dramatic and over reacting; but today is my 'cry' day; tomorrow I will get up, wipe myself off and fight again (how? I don't know.) Say a prayer for me.

Wow, what is with the universe today? I got through the day by knowing that tomorrow will be better....honest.

Let's connect in the morning to confirm that

I've got adhesion stories for you too.
Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things . Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!

Katie- I was thinking that is was you who had adhesions (from a hysterectomy?). I would love to hear more. Like how you keep the pain down? Does constipation make it worse? It seems to be why my dr thinks I am hurting (you can read more on my post-surgery thread). Not sure how much it costs to call Canada; but I would love to chat with you. I'll have to check into that.

Kathy, I am a little surprised your doctor is taking you off the Vicodin cold turkey, and doing the bait and switch thing with this new medication. I wonder if that is standard procedure. Maybe Justin can chime in on this. I think you could be in for a few days of this crappy feeling, quite possibly. Hope you get to feeling better rapidly!

    Kathy,

I just read your post surgical blog. Wow! I can't even imagine feeling that lousy. I have abdominal discomfort/pain but it is nowhere near as severe as yours.

I recall having a minor adhesion in the "reproductive" area years ago & it felt like something was twisting & pulling. It was quite painful. The doctor couldn't say why it happened either. If this is the same pain that you are feeling, then oh my goodness!!!

It upsets me to hear that you are in so much pain.I'm hoping that as the days pass that you find some relief.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Kathy, I am so sorry that you are suffering. I have a bunch to share with you, but am not able to chat tonight. I have a free calling to the U.S. plan on evenings and weekends, so we could catch up either way. If you like, just PM your number, and I'll call you at a time that's convenient for both of us.

My mailbox here is getting full, and I need to find a way to save the messages without opening every one of them and saving to my computer. I couldn't figure out how to do it more easily on the other board...some things just escape me

    Toodles for now.

Hey all, I broke down and took a Vicodin yesterday and 2 today. I just couldn't handle it. I am going to try and do more of the wean than cold turkey. I need to call my dr and make sure that it is ok to take the Naprelan and Vicodin. I am still majorly constipated. I just went and bought the 'drink' that you drink the night before a colonoscopy. It was disgusting; but I took the max dose. It has been 30 minutes and not so much as a "rumbly in my tumbly". I was reading last night about adhesions and bowel blockages. I have just about all of the signs, my remarks are in red below.
    Here are the warning signs:
More significant intestinal obstruction can cause the following symptoms:
    • Severe, crampy abdominal pain check
    • Nausea and vomiting check for the nausea and vomited once
    • Swelling of the abdomen (abdominal distension) I look pregnant
    • Inability to pass gas and absent or infrequent bowel movements check
    • Signs of dehydration, including dry skin, dry mouth and tongue, severe thirst, infrequent urination, fast heart rate and low blood pressure been extremely thirsty, will gulp 2 big glasses of water and feel thirsty 30 minutes later. I was honestly starting to worry that I might be diabetic, because of the crazy thirst. Urination is infrequent and dark yellow, even though I am consuming 10+ cups of water a day
Frankly, reading this and fitting all the categories, scared the sh*t out of me (I wish literally- Cathy can you sneak back one of the Germany flush your system drinks?). I called my step-mom at 11pm last night, in a panic (she is a family nurse practitioner). She told me to not worry, as long as I was having bowels I was ok. Basically, from what she said and everything I read, the course of treatment is do nothing, until it gets to the point where you can't go and then go to the ER and end up with emergency surgery. Ok, this course of action is not ok with me. I am not going to end up in the ER with some random dr cutting on me. I scheduled an appointment with a gastro dr. for Monday. I am guessing they will either do imaging or a colonoscopy. At this point, I don't care, I just want to feel better. I'm freaking out a little bit and just praying that I will not end up in an emergency situation. Thank you for all the support, it means so much to me.

    Default Hi Kathy

Thats just down right horrible for them to get U 2 go cold turkey. Its so much easier to taper off it slowly so it doesnt effect you than stop abrubtly. Justin may be able to answer this but surely they cant be taught that in medicine school that cold turkey is the way to get someone off opiates. There a good drug called bupronorphine and over here its often given to herion addicts to get them off it. They also make a lower dose patch for people in pain. Its for helping people in pain reduce there opiate use. It is an opiate and from what I understand is that it also blocks other opiates working. The patch is called Norspan, maybe have a look into that or have a look at my post im starting now on Topical pain relief.

I hate to see people suffer like that as I have been thru it and it is not nice. The first time I was so sick from midnight and by 8am I was waiting in my doctors parking area being sick waiting for him to get there to give me some opiates. They had 2 send the nurse out 2 get me a shot of morphine just so I could get home. Its a horrible way to do it. It should always be tapered off especially if the doc has been prescribing it 2 U.

U sound like U still have some pills left luckily, I hope U have enough for several weeks atleast so U can do it slowly.

    I hope U dont suffer
    Goodluck
    Mark
