Default The Heat...how are you coping?

Like most of the country, we are in the middle of one of the biggest heatwaves ever. Today will be the worst. With the humidex, it will be 118F (what it really feels like) and without, about 100F.

I know that KBear deals with this on a regular basis, but not sure if the humidity is also a factor there in Texas. (a dry heat??) A great deal of the US is suffering as well. We didn't get air conditioning for a couple of years when we first moved here...I don't know how we coped; sometimes the humidity was almost 90%. I woke up soaked this morning, a couple of hours early, even with it set at a moderate temperature.

    How is everyone else doing?
Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things . Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!

Oh yeah! It's hot. I think we have broken a record for the number of days 100 or over. I get out early, about 60 am and walk the dog. I try not to think about it the rest of the time and stay in. However, we are supposed to play golf with our couples group today at 4:30 pm. It's about 102 right now. We are riding carts but it still will be very hot. I think we're all waiting for someone else to cancel out. We only play 9 holes but that takes about 2 hours. I'm drinking lots of water and looking for shade everywhere.

Golf??? UGH!! I spend any extra time hosing down the horses. Two of three were as wet with sweat as if I had already hosed them...wish I could afford air conditioning in the barn. They can't even go out in the evening when it's cooler because the mosquitoes are so terrible.

Allison, I love your type of weather...fall and winter have become my favourite seasons, except for -30, of course I canceled my dog agility class last night. Pixel has a heavy black coat and even the instructor said he didn't bring his dog to the earlier class. Some love the heat though, so he had to run it.

Are those in the US having the terrible storms along with the heat? Hail, high winds, sideways rain and mini tornados...what more could a girl ask for!

Be careful in the heat, everyone. The heat here in Philly is deadly with a heat index of 115.

Extremely hot weather like this can creep up on you until it's too late--make sure to stay hydrated and avoid being outside if at all possible.

Woohoo. The week-end will be in the cool 90s. My golf was no worse than usual in the 100 + heat, just it's usual bad.
Whether you play golf or not you will understand these:

Top Ten Reasons Why Golf Is Better Than S*x......
#10... A below par performance is considered darn good.
#09..... You can stop in the middle and have a cheeseburger and a couple of beers.
#08... It's much easier to find the sweet spot.
    #07.. Foursomes are encouraged.
#06... You can still make money doing it as a senior.
#05.... Three times a day is possible.
#04... Your partner doesn't hire a lawyer if you play with
    someone else.
#03... If you live in Florida , you can do it almost every day.
#02... You don't have to cuddle with your partner when
    you're finished.

And the NUMBER ONE reason why golf is better than s*x.....

#01... When your equipment gets old you can replace it!

Gil, now you're going to tell me that you don't have any nasty biting bugs either? I might be asking for directions soon!

It went down to 27 C today, just below 90F, and it felt cool Sort of like when it warmed up to -25 in winter up north, after a week or two of -50...down right tropical! When I moved to the east coast and it would go down to 18 below freezing for a day or two, I used to tell the locals we would pray it would warm UP to these temperatures! It's all relative I guess. But the heat did remind me of Brazil last night....(and it strains the brain going back between Fahrenheit and Celcius...I'm just old enough to have used both in my lifetime, but the conversions hurt as I get older! )

Justin, I agree. It was 118 F here with the humidex. People just don't think. For some bizarre reason, a young local couple thought it was OK to leave their month old baby in the closed car while they went into Home Depot a couple of days ago. They were gone for at least half an hour before police came and broke the window and rescued the poor thing. She was unconscious but eventually recovered....and the parents were not charged . I swear, some people should have a license to reproduce.

Wyoming in the mountains does sound good. I have been checking the temps in Colorado and though they are not near as high as here, they aren't the usual cool 60s and 70s, they are in mid-eighties.
There were two adults (not seniors) here that died in their house in the heat. Seems kind of strange that they didn't attempt to go somewhere cool like a mall or library or get outside in a hose. There were also 3 people trying to get a dead car battery to start and once they did, they left it running with the garage door shut. One died the other 2 suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning but lived. I agree with the comedian that ends his jokes with "Here's your sign!", meaing all people this dumb should have a sign saying "I'm an idiot" so we could look out for them. (Including the parents that left a baby in a car with over 100 degree temperatures.)

Yes we have plenty of bugs They spray for mosquitoes just in the town and surround homes but in the woods they are deadly the horse flies the worse.

The higher you get in the mountains the less bugs
