Default How much closer does big brother, i.e. the Fed man plan to get!!

I had to go to a urologist recently for a rash of 3 kidney stones and a kidney/prostate infection that raised my PSA to 9.8. When I checked in, she already had records of previous surgeries, docs I was seeing and the drugstore and meds i was taking. I know about HIPPA but this type of practice without my permission is somewhat distasteful. The resident that wrote up my discharge summary back in December for my back surgery saw that I was on Prilosec and automatically assumed it was GERD. It is not. It is gastric ulcer prevention from to much in the way of NSAids. Every doc I see since my surgery says :Ohh, I see you take Prilosec for GERD". If I expect the question I use a pre typed 3x5 card with the correct info on it.

It is starting to look like they are using the model of the FBI to go by.
Low back pain became somewhat dehabilitating in 2005
Have had 11 steroid injections, IDET, Trial for nerve stimulator, PT, chiropractic trial, practically every med known to mankind. Discogram indicated three diseased levels with L5-S1 being the most likely pain generator. Post minimally invasive PLIF with internal fixation (titanium) on 12-28-09 of L5-S1. Doing better than expected. Last opioid 7/9/10. Five months pain free, then my neck turned against me. MRI on 12/1/10-- disease at C2 to C7. Only surgical alternative is to fuse entire C-spine. Diagnosed now with Aggressive Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis with cord & brainstem active lesions

Just to clarify, you had never seen this urologist before yet they had all your records? That's just crazy.

Yes, that is correct. When I checked in with the front office staff, I signed the usual HIPPA forms allowing them access to medical records. I had no idea that they could pull everything up from the time I checked in until I was called to go to the back.

One major hospital around here has a program, mnemonically known as LASTWORD. Nurses, doctors, etc. who have their own access number for purposes of tracking back to see has gotten information, can pull up most anyones medical information. The password/access number thing is easily worked around. Say your divorced husband wants to know your medical records as to why you are in a hospital. He has a friend that is a nurse, PA, doctor to pull up the records or get one of their friends to pull them up. It's not that hard to come up with a rational excuse. All illegal but unless someone antes up a lot of money to track and subpoena people, no foul.

The power of computers is such these days that the potential for abuse is scary. Life insurance companies would love to know if a woman is + for BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene (breast cancer). I live in a state where an employer can fire/lay off employees without giving a reason. If the employer has a lot of people with a history of injuries, he may move on to someone who doesn't.

I know these are all "What Ifs" but it bothered me that my records were so easily and quickly obtained. Just look at LEAKY LINKS or whatever that site is that got all the pentagon records. That was suppose to be a hard thing to get. Doesn't appear to be that hard.

Wow, those all are scary scenarios. I never really thought about that, as all you hear is how great it would be to have all medical records electronic. Guess I didn't think about how much easier it would be to abuse that information if it were that readily available.
