    Default Pain Scale

Does anyone remember the post about the pain scale? It gave an excellent explanation of pain levels from one to ten.

I did a search with no luck.
Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things . Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!

I did find that my doctor had a different scale than the PT did. I think the 0 in the doctor's was no pain, the 10 level was close to being unconscious with pain. I think the PTs was a little lower but level 10 was unconcious.
    Diagnosis:
    Degenerative disc disease throughout spine
Generalized disc bulging with mild narrowing of thecal sac in L2-L3, L3-L4, L4-L5, L5-S1.
    Moderate spinal stenosis L4-L5
    Foraminal narrowing
    Recent compression Fx at T10,T11.
    Treatment:
    Spinal decompression 2007
Cortisone injection in lower back in 2010
    Relieved of pain for now
    Hope for ADR

The "pain scale" (1-10) is very subjective, of course, and (I hate to say) meaningless. Patients often state that their pain is a "10" and, yet, they are able to sit and talk with me.

NIH Pain Consortium -- Pain Intensity Scales

The following pain intensity scales are used by researchers at the NIH Clinical Center to measure how intensely individuals are feeling pain and to monitor the effectiveness of treatments. Some of the scales are appropriate for children and adults; others are used for infants.

The link is to a page with all kinds of pictures and smiles and frowns and stuff. Some of these are for kids but many are for adults too. Pain rating scales - Google Search
Low back pain became somewhat dehabilitating in 2005
Have had 11 steroid injections, IDET, Trial for nerve stimulator, PT, chiropractic trial, practically every med known to mankind. Discogram indicated three diseased levels with L5-S1 being the most likely pain generator. Post minimally invasive PLIF with internal fixation (titanium) on 12-28-09 of L5-S1. Doing better than expected. Last opioid 7/9/10. Five months pain free, then my neck turned against me. MRI on 12/1/10-- disease at C2 to C7. Only surgical alternative is to fuse entire C-spine. Diagnosed now with Aggressive Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis with cord & brainstem active lesions

Thanks lolenona! This is exactly the same one that I was looking for, minus the happy/unhappy faces I know I saw the original one here somewhere, but this saves any more time searching.

So glad you are having surgery and are not going to have to have the 9 daily. It's hard to believe that I used to be a 9 daily, now I'm happily a 0-2. What's funny is had you asked me before when I would have 'back pain' like at the end of pregnancy, I would have said an 8, now that's a good day! LOL Perspective makes all the difference.

    Kbear,
I agree with you. Before all of this happened to me, I had such a low pain tolerance. I can tolerate so much more pain now than what I could tolerate 3 years ago. Although I admit, that after a bit, my mind blows and I scream that I can't take it anymore. Then I am fine again, and I reset.

I don't enjoy it anymore than I did before though. I'm not looking forward to the post-op pain. I know it's going to be worse than what I have now, which is going to really suck. But I know that it's the beginning of the end.
