Default Phil Collins reveals he will never drum again due to spine injury

I've read a lot of stories lately about tennis stars to rock stars with spine injuries. I thought I would pass this one on:

Exclusive: Phil Collins reveals he will never drum again due to spine injury
    By Tom Bryant 10/09/2009

Phil Collins yesterday revealed he will never play the drums again because of a spine injury. The Genesis star says he can no longer even hold his drum sticks because sitting at a kit is too painful.

Phil, 58, said: "I've got a condition that means I can't play any more. After playing drums for 50 years, I've had to stop. "Obviously I'm very sad about it. My vertebrae has been crushing my spinal cord because of the position I drum in...

This indeed is a very sad day. Spinal conditions can hit anyone, no matter who they are.

Flashback to 1976. Wings stadium, Kalamazoo Michigan. Genesis was my very first concert. I was 15 at the time and totally awestruck watching him drum and lead sing at the same time. I have followed his career ever since.

That's a pretty sweet concert for your first. I'm a concert junkie and go to as many as I can, but I will not disclose my first concert ever--the tickets were free, but I still hang my head in shame.

Dave, you are so right about spine conditions affecting anyone. Unfortunately, 80% of people will experience some form of a debilitating spine injury at some point in their life.

I have been spending less time on the drums since my surgery. I miss it very much.

Come on Justin! Tell us! Was it New Kids On The Block? Maybe NSYNC? Just kidding!

It really is a shame to hear that Phil will no longer be playing the drums. I actually like his stuff, my husband on the other hand, not so much.

It really stinks when your injury keeps you from playing. I haven't played my synthesizer in years because I couldn't stand in 1 place for too long. Think it's time to buy a piano bench & see if that helps.
Disc Bulge C4/C5, Disc Degeneration T11/T12, Bi-Lateral tears L5/S1, Diagnosed w/ Lumbar Disc Derangement w/ Radiculopaphy. Treatment: IDET, Percutaneous Discectomy, SI Joint Injection, Facet Block. All failed. Empire BC/BS Denied Coverage for ADR-lost all of my appeals. MVP also denied coverage.

    Anterior/Posterior Fusion L5/S1 -1/20/09 - I'm not 100% but I'll take the 85%! When the weather co-operates, it's 95% woohoo!

    Default bummer about no drummer

    Bumdeal,

I've always been a huge fan of Phil and his contributions to my music collection. I'm not sure how many years ago it was, perhaps 5 or 7 years, Jimmy Page was going to tour with the Black Crowes but cancelled due to back problems. Also, James Hetfield of Metallica fame cancelled his performance in Atlanta (I was there at the show) and I thought there was going to be a riot at the arena. He was wake boarding earlier that afternoon and aggravated his spine so bad that he couldn't perform. I hate to see anyone sidelined but it does bring awareness to the serious life altering result of spine problems.

I saw Jimmy Page with the Black Crowes in Albuquerque -- it was a great show  and it was the last show before the tour was canceled due to Page's back injury that night.

My very first concert, as a boy of 15, with a pint of vodka in my boot and, a lid of grass, was the Grateful Dead in Los Angeles. My, My, I am dating myself.
