Default Resveratrol claims seen as suspect, despite not having to pass safety, effectiveness reviews

Resveratrol claims seen as suspect, despite not having to pass safety, effectiveness reviews.

The New York Times (8/18, D4, Arnquist) reports, "Since scientists discovered in 2003 that resveratrol, a chemical found in grape skins and red wine, might be linked to long life, dietary supplement companies have tried to cash in." But, "the idea that resveratrol can lengthen life, is based on animal experiments, which do not necessarily translate to humans," and "no one knows exactly how much resveratrol should be consumed." For consumers, however, "this uncertainty is not apparent on websites selling resveratrol products, which promote its anti-aging and weight-loss powers often with a blogger's personal testimony." For its part, "the FDA has issued two warning letters to two companies selling resveratrol products to stop making false claims," but the agency "does not require dietary supplements to pass the same quality, safety and effectiveness reviews as prescription or over-the-counter drugs." Meanwhile, the Federal Trade Commission "has not charged any businesses for deceptive advertising of resveratrol products," according to an agency spokeswoman.

Default Action of resveratrol on intervertebral discs

The 2008 article I posted the other day about resveratrol does relate to bovine intervertebral disc cartilage but the authors say that the "data suggests resveratrol may have considerable promise in the treatment of DDD" so I guess the jury's out at the moment 'till more research is done!

In a decade or two's time DDD is going to be so much easier to treat & manage!!!

    1993 Back pain age 29.
    1998-2001 DDD at L1/2. 10 admissions for discography/epidurals/facet injections/disc injections/RFA's.
2005 ALIF at L1/2 with BMP & good result: pain free
2007 DDD at L4/5 unresponsive to epidural. Discography: early degeneration, anular tear & bulge. Limited response to core strengthening.
    2009 ADR (activ L) L4/5.
    2012 Myofascial Pain Syndrome T10-L2
