Something is really wrong with my dog

Not sure what is going on with my dog, but last night she could hardly stand up. When she finally got up she was trembling. She hasn't left her bed since last night. Didn't want to go out this morning. Of course, I am going to call the vet as soon as they open this morning. She was scheduled to have eye surgery on Monday, but clearly that has to be postponed. I am truly wondering if this is it, and she may need to be put down? She is a 9 1/2 year old golden retriever, Sophie. My last golden died at age 9. This is scaring the crap out of me.

's are just like people, except they have fur on all the time. I hope everything is OK with Sophie. (that's one of my cats names). Please let us know how she is doing.

CL- I'll say a prayer for Sophie. I love golden retrievers, they are beautiful and have such a good temperment, my sister has one. I don't know if this applies to goldens; but I am told boxers only have a life span of 7 or 8 years. I read that this was because of the purebred and that it basically keeps all the good and bad genes in the family line (even though they are not inbred). I think it is similar to sickle cell running in african american lines. My boxer just turned 7 and I can't imagine losing him, he's a pain in the rear; but I love em'.

I am so sorry that Sophie is ill. I will be praying for you and Sophie! Goldens are my favorite. We lost ours 5 years ago. We now have a mini-goldendoodle because we didn't think we needed another big dog (42 lbs vs 60+lbs). I love Abby dearly but she is not Duncan - I still miss him. They are certainly part of the family though and I know how scared you are. You and Sophie will be in my thoughts - plese let us know how she is doing.

Thanks guys. It really means alot. It is not looking good for ole' Sophie. She had a stroke, hence why she couldn't walk. The vet says her prognosis is grave. She may easily have a second stroke, so they are keeping her there for a few days, to treat her, etc. I could have brought her home to watch her, but I had to be able to carry her outside to pee, and uh, she weights about 77 pounds. That would be impossible. Best she is at the vet's for now, with a watch and wait tx plan.

Kathy, big dogs typically can make it all the way to 13, but that's about it. My last golden died at 9 years old too. I was really hoping Sophie could make it to 12 or 13. If she has to be put down, I have got to take a break from dogs. I love them to death, and it just kills me when the inevitable happens. Always takes me by surprise. How will I go to the cabin without my beloved dog?

Way sad right now.

Thanks for updating us on Sophie. I'm so sorry to hear that she had a stroke. However, it is good to know that she is being continuously monitored at the vet. We will keep both of you in prayer. For what it's worth: our dog Sherwin had a stroke and went on to live another year--I hope this will be the case with Sophie. If you need anything, I'm here for you.

Oh Cindylou, I still tear up when I think I hear my little terrier's footsteps behind me sometimes, and it's been two years now. He truly was one of my 'children' and we had him for 13 years. And our big old lab cross made it to thirteen, so fingers crossed for Sophie. I got a pup a month after my terrier passed, as I just couldn't be in the house without a dog, so I know what you mean in your last sentence.

My grandparents were in their 70s when they got their last dog, and they almost all passed within months of each other.

They all are part of the family, but there are some heart dogs out there that are truly special, that stay with us forever. It sounds like Sophie is one of those for you.

Here's a couple of pictures of Sophie this summer. Thanks for the encouragement you all, and thanks for the hope too, Justin. I'll see what the vet says tomorrow.
