Thank you. I keep thinking about going to school; but not sure, with my back the way it is, if I would be able to do the job once I got the degree. That's my fear, spending all that money to go to school, with the intention of having a job to pay it back, then not being able to.

I had thought about asking my doctor to record my surgery, so I could watch it; but didn't figure he would go for it!Just feeling the rods in my back sends me a little bit so I am not attempting to watch any surgeries any time soon!

• July 30, 2008 re-opened 28 days later to remove bone cement that had leaked onto S1 nerve root
• August 2008 Pulmonary embolism, double pneumonia, collapsed left lung, re-hospitalized 1 week
• March 10, 2009 Right SI Joint Fusion
• April 27, 2010 2nd right hip arthroscopy to remove adhesions and release psoas muscle
• September 30, 2010 lumbar facet rhizotomy
• December 9, 2010 12 bilateral lumbar trigger point and steroid injections
• December 23, 2010 12 more bilateral trigger point injections w/o steroid
• February 15, 2011 ESI bilaterally in lower lumbar...relief only for few days. Considering 1 more.
Did Spinal Cord Stimulator trial from 5/11/11-5/17/11 with excellent results; Spinal Cord Stimulator surgery is Monday,

That is soo me, it's like I can't not look... even if it is gross or I'm like ouch, that's gonna hurt... I'm still just glued to it. I would really like to be a trauma nurse and maybe one day my back will allow that.I have a morbid curiosity about these things.

In my unbiased opinion (hee hee), trauma nursing might be a bit much.
You might be able to handle the lifting but trauma patients and any patients in general are sometimes apt to kick you or pull on you, or...you get the picture.
It is murder to the back.
But you know what, do not give up on your dreams. There are many jobs in nursing and you can make it through nursing school if you just are careful.
I know what you mean though, I was watching that show, Trauma, tonight and I was just glued. I was checking if they were using proper protocol and such.
I miss the blood and guts too much.
As far as nursing, there are jobs that you can protect your back, I believe.
You are almost an honorary nurse, since you can stand the blood and guts. Usually nurses can discuss a coronary bypass when eating their lunches.

As somebody who used to be a nurse in theatre, as far as the blood & guts are concerned it can be squeamish at first but to be honest when you're dealing with it day in & day out you do get used to it over time. It becomes routine to a degree.
I don't know what triggered DDD in me but when I was nursing we did a LOT of manual lifting on the wards & it was the usual story of being understaffed with little help. These days in the UK patients are encouraged to move themselves wherever possible & there are all sorts of lifting aids available. As runagain says there are various semi clinical roles now which are more back friendly. For me, working on trauma or accident & emergency on a permanent basis would have been too much of an adrenaline rush 24/7 - I found it pretty mentally & physically exhausting as a student nurse but each to their own!

1998-2001 DDD at L1/2. 10 admissions for discography/epidurals/facet injections/disc injections/RFA's.
2005 ALIF at L1/2 with BMP & good result: pain free
2007 DDD at L4/5 unresponsive to epidural. Discography: early degeneration, anular tear & bulge. Limited response to core strengthening.
2009 ADR (activ L) L4/5.
2012 Myofascial Pain Syndrome T10-L2
