There are and have been tons of investors buying houses in Texas too. Even in the major up, they were buying. Alot from California, sight unseen buying a house. Our HOA told us they would call an owner and let them know a tree was dead and needed replaced, and they wouldn't even know the yard had a tree. Our neighborhood actually added a by-law, that no more than 10% of houses in the neighborhood can be rentals. It was getting to be an issue with all the renters (who sadly alot of times really don't care what the yard and exterior of the house look like). We also added a rule that only 10% of the houses on a given street can be rentals.

We were looking in Lehigh as well. We ended up in Cape Coral since the 2 houses that we liked in Lehigh didn't have high speed internet available which my husband needs for work.

Investors are snapping up houses left & right down here. I would say that 95% of the sales are cash deals. Some of that is because the houses are foreclosures & are stripped or they have Chinese drywall. We looked at a lot of "scary" houses.

Cindy, the property values have tanked in this area of Florida. Hopefully they will rebound soon.

    What is Chinese drywall?

It's interesting that your housing economy is still so bad, and I feel awful that you are having such a hard time selling your homes. I thought that they were starting to recover more than that. Is this normal right across the country, or just in big pockets? Prices have never really dropped here, at least where we live, and sales are almost booming.

My daughter and son-in-law just bought a townhouse under construction and almost had a bidding war on it as there were only two left in the subdivision. The price of the lots had jumped over $5K in three months since they first started looking in the spring.

Other provinces aren't quite so lucky, but none are as bad as things down there. I'm sorry for all those affected.
Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things . Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!

Chinese drywall is drywall that was imported from China. The drywall causes copper and metal surfaces to corrode & releases an awful sulfur smell.

The corrosion has been known to affect copper wiring, air conditioners, faucets, & people who have this in their homes have been complaining of health problems associated to the drywall.

While the obvious fix would be to tear the drywall & damaged wiring out, they can't say for sure if this would end the problems as they can't say if this stuff has seeped into the wood studs.

There was a huge housing boom in Florida from 2003-2007. This coupled with Florida getting hammered by hurricanes caused a drywall shortage. Builders & contractors ended up using the imported stuff & now the lawsuits have started.

    Sorry for the book.

    !!!!

Good grief! Such is the price of cutting corners

I am a strong believer that much of the off-gassing from new building materials cause environmental illness, and this is a great example. Those poor people.

This is not unlike the time up here a few decades ago when the government was giving out grants for homeowners who put in urea formaldehyde insulation,. It was supposed to promote energy efficiency, to provide an inexpensive option to regular insulation.

It turns out of course, that the cheaper alternative allegedly caused huge health problems, the details of which I can't remember, but now it is illegal to sell a home with UF in it. Sellers have to sign a disclaimer stating that their house does not have any in it.

Will that be happening down there with the Chinese drywall?
