    Default T'was the Night Before Surgery

    My wife put this together. Silly but funny.

    'Twas the night before Surgery, when all through the spine

    Not a disc was stirring, not even a nerve;

    The facets were hung by the spine with care,

    In hopes that the surgeon soon would be there;

    The disc’s were nestled all snug in their vertebra,

    While visions of removal danced in my mind;

    And mamma in her 'chair, and I in my hospital bed,

    Had just settled down for a long painful night,

    When out in the hall there arose such a clatter,

    I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

    Away to the door I flew like a flash,

    Tore open the door and turned on the light.

    The glow on the floor of the new polished tile,

    Gave the hope of pain free days ahead,

    When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

    But a surgeon, and eight friendly nurses,

    With a brand new gurney, so shiny and bright, I knew in a moment it must be my doc.

    More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,

    And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

    "Now Kathy!, now Katie!, now CindyLou and Cindy!

    On Cathy!, on Chelsie!, on Heidi and Brianna!

    To the top of the Lumbar! To the top of the Cervical!

    Now dash away! dash away! dash away pain!"

    As nerves that before the walking would hurt,

    When they meet with an bone, mount to the spine,

    So up to the operating room the coursers they flew,

    With the gurney full of me, and my surgeon too.

    And then, in a twinkling, I heard in the room

    The clanking and clunking of each little instrument.

    As I drew in my meds, and was turning around,

    Down the hall my surgeon came with a bound.

    He was dressed in all green, from his head to his foot,

    And his clothes were all fresh with no wrinkles in sight;

    A surgical mask he had flung on his face,

    And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

    His eyes -- how they twinkled! his hands how strong!

    His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

    His droll little mouth was covered with cloth,

    And the beard of his chin was freshly shaved off;

    The stump of a scalpel he held tight in his hand,

    And the lights they encircled his head like a angel;

    He had a broad face and a little round belly,

    That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

    He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old doc,

    And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;

    A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

    Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

    He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

    And removed all the pain; then turned with a jerk,

    And laying his scalpel aside on the table,
    And giving a nod, out the room he went;

    He went to the door, to his team gave a whistle,

    And away they all walked, like angles of mercy.

    But I heard him exclaim, ere he walked out of sight,
    ”Have a pain free life and take care of your spine.”

    This was a riot. I hope for all the same wishes. A minimized pain free life. If we were completely pain free it might make us forget to help others. God's gift to me is some pain so that I feel compassion for those that still suffer. I am grateful that I am not in a wheelchair and that I can do a great many things. My prayer is that I never forget where I came from so that I might help others along in their journey.

    Merry Christmas all and a Happy New year.
