Default What have you been reading lately?

One of my best tricks in distracting from the obvious pains and discomforts is to read. I love to read all kinds. Right now I'm reading two: one called Just Jackie about the life and times of Jacqueline Onassis and one called The Last Trial of Socrates as an idea of how random my reading is. I keep thinking about getting one of those eReaders (eg, Amazon kindle) but, eh, can't tell if they're worth the fuss or not.

Carson- I got the amazon and kindle apps on my Iphone (free) and really like them. I'd still like to get a real one.... someday (I'd really like the Ipad which does it all, but I doubt that is happening anytime soon.)

Lately I've been hooked on anything written by Jodi Picoult. I read one of her books several months ago, then was hooked... I've read about 8 or 9 of them now and love them all. The only one I'm having trouble getting into is My Sisters Keeper and I think it's because I have watched the movie and they are very similar. I'm also reading a book by Dr. James Dobson, called Bringing Up Girls (he wrote Bringing Up Boys too.)

I love to read and so far my kids love to read too. My oldest, Emma 7 yrs., has started reading several different kid's series of chapter books.... she's just like me, if she gets a good book, she will read it non stop until she has finished it. My little one has several favorite books that she has memorized and will 'read' to me, it's hilarious, she'll even do voices for the characters (I do that when I read to them).

    I have recently read:

"The Confession" by John Grisham- one of his best yet, I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good legal drama

"Let the right one in" -for those who enjoy a good vampire novel (nothing like twilight but not for everyone)

The Larsson Trilogy by Stieg Larsson ("The girl with the dragon tattoo")- highly recommend it if you are one of the few that has not picked it up yet. I have read all three novels twice.

"The island beneath the sea" by Isabel Allende- I read it in spanish but I'm sure the english version is just as good

"Accused" by Mark Gimenez, sequel to his first novel The Color of Law, another excellent legal thriller

I also read a book that I would like to recomend to Justin (if he has any free time left to read ). Its called "Complications: A Surgeon's notes on an imperfect science". Can't remember the author but I'm sure you can find it in Amazon by the title. It is a very good read for anyone who has ever faced surgery, like many of us, and wants to see things from a doctor's perspective. I'm not a doctor and have no background in science or anything related but I was able to follow it no problem.

I'll admit I read the Twilight series and really enjoyed it. I didn't think it would be my thing and wasn't going to read them. I then went to my sister's and her and my niece made me watch the first movie, then my niece told me to just read a couple of chapters in the book- I was hooked. I couldn't believe it appealed to me like it did, read all 4 books in 5 days. I literally would stay up half the night reading, just couldn't find a good stopping point.

Kathy, I also read twilight and was also shocked at how much into them I was. You would like "Let the right one in". It's such an original love story, although I said that it was not for everyone because some of the scenes are very graphic and one of the characters is a pedophile. So it is not an easy read like twilight. The movie came out recently in the US, but they renamed it "Let me in". It was not bad and had very good acting, the girl from Kick Ass, Hit Girl, does a very good job as the girl vampire.

Thanks, Claudia. I've read Complications. It's by Atul Gawande and it's such a great read. Here's a link to the book on Amazon for those interested: Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science.

I wish I had more time to read for pleasure. Reading books is like crack for my wife.

Oh, I love to read too. Read to my boys like mad when they were little and ultimately all of my sons, grown now, are big readers as well. In fact, all 3 write too. My oldest just finished his first novel, and his writing group is in the middle of their final critique of it, after all that gets polished up, he's on to hopefully find a publisher. Please remember him in your prayers about this endeavor. He's worked on this novel for a solid 4 years. My middle son has done some writing, but it began to take a back seat as his "Ironman" training came to the forefront. And my youngest is a poet. He's just filling out applications for Graduate School for an MFA in Poetry, in fact. Ok, slight diversion. lol

I am currently reading Kenny Salwey's Tales of a River Rat. It's a true story that was chronicled on the Discovery Channel, based on this man's true adventures along the Mississippi River. He's a hunter, trapper, outdoor guide, self-sufficient woodsman, and instructor on environmental education. I love nature books, but also love a wide range like Carson. I've also read about every book by Augusten Burroughs, the author of Running With Scissors; Dry; Sellevision; and A Wolf at the Table. Nothing like a good book on a cold, wintry night. This is a great thread. I love getting ideas about future reading material from others too. Thanks for starting this Carson. Cindylou
