JK, what you just said is more the reason to stay on the Cymbalta. It helps with pain, the emotions, the hopelessness and all the other negative feelings that go hand and hand with being a spine patient. We have all been there, it does get better.

First thing I would suggest you do is make a promise to do nothing rash until you can talk to someone. Family, friend or even Crisis Control. Call whoever prescribed the Cymbalta, explain that you need immediate relief, and you need to see or talk with someone right away to get some relief. If they cannot be reached go to the emergency room. A family member of mine went on a trial of Cymbalta and didn't tolerate it very well. I was told about 50% of the people who are started on it have to give it up due to side effects. If you have not done so, get an appointment to see a pain management doctor. General practice doctors, surgeons and the like are not really comfortable treating major pain.
Low back pain became somewhat dehabilitating in 2005
Have had 11 steroid injections, IDET, Trial for nerve stimulator, PT, chiropractic trial, practically every med known to mankind. Discogram indicated three diseased levels with L5-S1 being the most likely pain generator. Post minimally invasive PLIF with internal fixation (titanium) on 12-28-09 of L5-S1. Doing better than expected. Last opioid 7/9/10. Five months pain free, then my neck turned against me. MRI on 12/1/10-- disease at C2 to C7. Only surgical alternative is to fuse entire C-spine. Diagnosed now with Aggressive Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis with cord & brainstem active lesions

    JK,

Most of us here are not trained in crisis management, but we do care, and we take any suicide ideation or plan most seriously. If you are feeling suicidal JK I would ask only two things of you: that you call 1-800-SUICIDE, and/or that you call a trusted friend, clergy, rabbi, etc. or any of us that you feel close to, to listen to you. PM us for phone numbers. Right now you have to find a way to reduce your pain (do you have pain management doctor?), and discover better ways of coping. Even when you get over this crisis, and I have no doubt you will, you need to still find ways to cope and take care of yourself. After you weather this crisis, I would recommend a couple of books, which are also helpful coping mechanisms. One is How I Stayed Alive When My Brain Was Trying To Kill Me, and another: Suicide, The Forever Decision. Believe me when I say this, we get your pain. You just need to find a way to reduce yours and increase your coping skills, like I said earlier. If you make one phone call, you are increasing your coping skills by 1. I remember reading somewhere that you will not feel relief if you are dead. You have to be alive to feel your relief from pain. Relief is only a feeling. You will get through this JK. Sincerely, Cindylou

This drug was powerful, my eyes have been open like an owl since taking it. I hope it wears off by the end of the day.

I dont understand why I cant cope.

Chronic pain WILL create depression...trust me, I've been there. I tried several anti-depressants and pain medicine before I found the right one. Please don't give up...there might be other anti-depressants that will work much better. For some antidepressant medicine, it can take 1-2 weeks before you actually benefit or see any results. Please hang in there and contact your physician ASAP and make them aware of the side effects. We are here for you! ((HUGS))

JK- I agree with what everyone has said, this may just not be the right medicine for you. You NEED to call the doctor who prescribed it and ask them what they want you to do. Do not just stop it without speaking with them. They may want to start you on a smaller dose and let your body adjust to it. It is a WONDERFUL feeling when you have been on the meds a few weeks and realize that you feel good and your mood is good. It is worth it to keep trying different medications, to go back to the doctor, to have your life. I know how you feel, I have been there and I can tell you I am so glad that I got on the medication and did not do something stupid. Please get help, they can also give you medication to help you immediately, they gave me Ativan when I was having a really hard time at one point and it was great. Please go see your doctor and get help. We care about you!

    JK,
For years now I have been in horrible pain as well. In August I was finally diagnosed by an excellent Neurosurgeon and find I am operable in a number of places along my spine where the nerves are being pushed on and I could use an adr at L3, however I have decided with my Neuro's consent to get myself in better physical and mental condition before I do anything.
I am slowly weaning off the narcotics and gabapentin I have been on for the past 12 months. I've found they really mess with my head. I was also on antidepressants for 3 years prior to that. I will only say that was a nasty experience. All these drugs have left me in an emotional and physical chemical soup....
Under Dr's supervision I am at work....Slow and steady...I am trying my best to be very aware of whats going on in my body and "babying" it....SLOWLY building myself up to be stronger....I am not being a hero and I will continue to take the meds my body needs to keep the pain manageable but I am no longer going to dose myself completely out of pain.
I use the pain intensity to guide me....For a while it threatened to overwhelm me but I realized I could USE it ....just a thought.
    PM me if you want.
Put suicide out of your thought process completely if you can. If you are unable to GET HELP. Those are RED FLAG thoughts. Pay attention.
    Your life is precious!!
There are many of us in the same boat as you and many in worse conditions....lots of understanding, willing to listen ears and hearts...makes the burden lighter when you share it.
{{{{{{{massaging HUG}}}}}}}}}....that is one thing the Neuro prescribed.....massages!!!!!! He said they are very beneficial! See the prescription is to be kind to yourself.....and get some genuine pampering
    Take care of yourself.

JK, it usually takes 4-6 weeks for antidepressants to "start" working. Give it some time. Hang in there.
