I've taken Meloxicam. My family doctor prescribed that particular anti inflammatory because of its reduced effects on the gastrointestinal tract. I have IBS & NSAID's make me bloated. If I'm on NSAID's I also taken stomach protection in the form of Lansoprazole.

If I need anti inflammatories, Meloxicam is the one that works for me.

I have taken it, a long time ago..... I can't remember if it was early in my injury or for something prior to that. I don't even remember if it helped, sorry I'm not much help on this.

I agree with you on Naproxen upsetting the stomach. And Naproxen Sodium is actually prescription strength Alleve. This is all the doctors would prescribe me for the years leading up to me putting my foot down and demanding and MRI to prove my pain was real due to significant issue. But I guess because I took so much of it my stomach would get tore up so I dont take it at all anymore. Not to mention I never really acheived much relief from it. But releiving my pain was going to take more than an anti-inflamatory. Hope it helps others though.

it belongs to the NsAIDs Drugs,,,,non-steroidal antiinflammatory,,,
especially meloxicam has shown at its low therapeutic dose to inhibit selectively the COX-2 enzyme< but not COX-1.COX-1 is responsible for the production of prostaglandins. this means meloxicam does not inhibit production of prostaglandins and this is why its more friendly to the stomach, not causing bleeding and peptic ulceration.

naproxen is not selective for COX-2,,this means its inhibits COX-1 too,,,so it inhibits the production of prostaglandins,,,,and this way it reduces the balance of the stomach,,,,,,
    it causes,,as sideeffects,,bleeding etc,,,like most NSAIDS

I took Naprelan for a few weeks, my doctor said it was a high dose of Naproxen that is easier on the stomach. Well it made me have to worst stomach aches and I had to quit it and go back to Hydrocodone.

I'm back on Mobic as well for several reasons. There are generics so $$ is less. It does help for arthritic type back pain, It's not quite as hard on my stomach. I had two gastric ulcers already due to NSAIDS. The best drug in the class for me is Celebrex at 400mg BID. But it's $$$ and may bring baggage along with it.
Low back pain became somewhat dehabilitating in 2005
Have had 11 steroid injections, IDET, Trial for nerve stimulator, PT, chiropractic trial, practically every med known to mankind. Discogram indicated three diseased levels with L5-S1 being the most likely pain generator. Post minimally invasive PLIF with internal fixation (titanium) on 12-28-09 of L5-S1. Doing better than expected. Last opioid 7/9/10. Five months pain free, then my neck turned against me. MRI on 12/1/10-- disease at C2 to C7. Only surgical alternative is to fuse entire C-spine. Diagnosed now with Aggressive Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis with cord & brainstem active lesions

This sounds like you took a page out of my "book of Life". I also took my moms Naproxen as I would beg my doc for an MRI.

    Meloxicam > Naproxen
