Thanks for sharing this Todd, I think this has been a long time coming. I was always prescribed the ones with 325 mg of Acetaminophen in them. I think that anytime you are dealing with a chronic pain patient that should be done, as well as counseling on the risks of acetaminophen overdose. You can always take more if you need it, though I think when you are in that much pain, it's not helping enough to warrant it, it's the vicodin part that relieves that kind of pain.

Great post Todd. I had my pain management doctor drop my meds to the lowest available NSAID content. The meds in Germany didn't incorporate NSAIDs. They had an added compound to help with constipation which I thought was a better idea than additional pain relief.

I had no idea that was even an option. Wish I would have known that back when I was on them, would definitely have requested that.

    Hi Cindylou,

I had no idea there were opioids without the APAP. Can you tell me what they are? Just another reason I hate taking the meds is the risk to my liver.

    Thanks, Catherine

    Hi Catherine,

Most of the "stronger" opioids are free of APAP. Here's a short list:

    Diluadid (hydromorphone)
    Fentanyl
    Opana (oxymorphone)
    Formulations of Morphine
    Certain forms of oxycodone (Oxycontin)

They also make oxycodone without APAP in varying strengths--if you have a Pain Management doctor writing your prescriptions for opioids, you could discuss having him/her write the oxycodone without APAP.

As always, the above is not medical advice. Please discuss all medication changes with a qualified health professional.
