It will be interesting to see what they decide. I think they should just require all patients who are prescribed narcotics to do random drug tests, that would take a bunch of the abusers out of the equation. I'm not sure if this is already required, or maybe it varies by state; but require a patient to check in (an actual visit) every 1-3 months. My doctor has never in 4.5 years written for more than a 3 month supply. I have to go at least every 3 months and if we are adjusting a dose, like an increase or decrease, I will go every month for a few month until I am on the same dose for a few months.
My sister in law's, brother died last month from a narcotic overdose. I had spoken to him once about what he took and he was being prescribed 8- 10mg Oxycodones a day, plus he would buy them off the street. He seriously would take 20+ pills a day. My sister in law told me that if he didn't have pills for a few hours he would begin vomiting and shaking like crazy. The crazy thing about this prescription he had was that he said he had only seen the doctor who wrote it 1 time and that was 3 years prior. This doctor would mail him the prescription every month, because it was written out of Oklahoma and he was in Texas, it had to be on paper b/c it was a higher class than Hydrocodone (can't remember what class it is, maybe a 4?) I was just stunned to hear that a doctor would refill a prescription for 3 years and had only seen the patient one time. I don't know how that guy keeps his license, but trust me if i ever find out who it is, I will turn them in.
