Ever since I fished that one day a few days back for 8 hours, my back is killing me. I am so mad at myself! It feels musculature, but I just can't break up the pain cycle now.Yesterday I finally went and had a massage, and though it helped some immediately, all the pain is now back. Any suggestions?

Yes, I did the heating pad last night. I will try that again. While I was laying on top of the massage table yesterday and there was heat in it, I could slowly feel my back letting up, but it keeps locking back up now. Thanks guys. I will definitely try more heat.

Hey Cindylou, do you have any muscle relaxants? When I screw up (yes, still, more times than I'd like to admit), I find that they 'break the cycle' well. Just enough for the memory in the muscles forget to tense up....wish it was as forgetful as I am all the time
That with the heat and stretching seems to help. (But the fishing was worth it, right? LOL)
Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things. Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!
I go by the old sports injury acronym which is RICE Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevate. Now they claim it is Ice, Ice,Ice.
Ice really does relieve pain even though I hate to do it. If you put ice on a few minutes at a time your skin gets used to it and it doesn't bother you. Never leave ice on more than 10 minutes at a time, then off 10 minutes and continue for an hour or two. Always have a light towel between the ice and your skin. Freeze ice in a foam cup and then tear off the top of the cup. You then have some insulation for your hand.
Diagnosis:
Degenerative disc disease throughout spine
Generalized disc bulging with mild narrowing of thecal sac in L2-L3, L3-L4, L4-L5, L5-S1.
Moderate spinal stenosis L4-L5
Foraminal narrowing
Recent compression Fx at T10,T11.
Treatment:
Spinal decompression 2007
Cortisone injection in lower back in 2010
Relieved of pain for now
Hope for ADR
Oh CL
I love the fact that you were fishing and you were in your element.
I agree with KRM Ice and heat
Please restand fish another day

HI CL,
i just came back from a massage. Maria told me to drink a lot of water. I came in from doing some yard work and wanted to die. Then off to the massager. Last week when I had one with Kyle, the next day I wanted to die. Maria told me to drink water to get rid of the toxins. I will see how much I can drink before going to bed. I also have an electric blanket. I keep that baby on winter and summer. I have the AC on because of allergies so having the blanket on really helps. I am so sorry you are still in pain. What did your doctor say about this? I will be talking to you, Carmen
- Scoliosis and multilevel severe degeneration of the intervertebral disks
- Marked multilevel facet arthrosis
- Fusion of the L5 and S1 vertebrae
- Grade 1 spondylolisthesis at L4-L5 and L5 and S1
- Slight antherolisthesis at L3-4
- Multilevel asymmetrical neuroforaminal narrowing
Yes, I am a big icer Kanrunmo. It just seemed like heat might be more appropriate in this case. Katie, I do have some muscle relaxers and will break down and take one. Good idea. Thx all. I hope the fishing was worth it!It will be if I can shake this off. Why do muscles have to have such a good, dang memory?!

Cindylou - Hope things are starting to settle down for you. I'm a big heat fan myself, that & resting up a bit. I've overdone things a little myself recently but not in a major way, just trying to fit a bit more housework into my routine so am taking it easy today. It's so darn frustrating that fitness returns so slowly especially if it's not your 1st spine surgery.
I haven't kept up with a lot of threads on here lately but I seem to remember you tried a TENS machine - would that be any help?
