    Default SI Joint Issues

Hey guys about 4 months ago i fell about 10 ft all onto my right leg and heard a big crack. The ortho had an mri of the back and hip with nothing abnormal. I have been in PT and chiro care and my problem is my SI joint is raised and jammed and it is causing lots of strain on my piriformis which is causing sciatica. What can be done about this? My PT and chiro cant seem to align me and my left leg is a little longer than the right. I do not get much pain in the SI region but the piriformis and leg pain is excruciating. Sitting is terrible and the most relief I get is laying on my side with a pillow in between my legs but even that still hurts. When i get up from laying down or sitting i hear a little pop too but like i said the pain is pretty much all in the butt. Anyone know much about this or what can be done maybe by surgical intervention?

    Default SI Joint

    Hello,
Have you had an SI joint injection or tried an SI belt to stabilize the jont? I am not sure any of those would help in your situation but for some people they can provide relief. There is another poster 'PLEM' on this site that was to undergo an SI joint fusion by Dr. Stark last week. I've not seen an update from him on how it went but he had a simliar situation with an upslip SI joint. Has anyone suggested an SI joint fusion? It is an uncommom procedure but I know a couple people who have had great success with it.

I am currently trying to sort out a similar problem that I feel is SI joint related. Sorry to hear that there is someone else in the same boat, espcecially since there is not an easy fix for this. Hopefully we will find a solution.

No one's legs are even, we are all asymmetrical. If that is diagnosed as causing a major problem then prosthetics for your shoes may help.

We all make odd noises, even the people with the healthiest bodies. If you can avoid surgery then thats a really good idea as the majority of people get better with conservative treatment and any surgery is a serious thing.

My pain management doctor said that the shot does not really work with SI joints that are slightly out of place because the juice does not stay. I most certainly dont want surgery but its been coming up on 5 months actually and to see no improvement is driving me nuts. The pain is completely dominating every minute of my life.

As mentioned above, if you can avoid surgery, do so. There are many conservative therapies that can help realign a short leg. As Alison mentioned, lifts in one's shoe can be prescribed to help with a short leg.

Trauma such as falling a distance of 10 ft probably rotated your innominate (hip). I would try to find a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine that specializes in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, as they can readily diagnose short leg syndrome and help realign your innominates and sacrum (thus, realigning your SI joint).

To find a DO that specializes in OMM, click here for the American Osteopathic Association's "Find a DO database." <-- Clickable link.

Here's a link to a thread here at the Spine Patient Society that has resources for Manipulative Therapies for Spine Patients: Manual & Manipulative Therapies for Spine Patients

I'm sorry that the pain is overwhelming. Your issue is not one that warrants surgical correction. Please see the links I posted above. Good luck!

Most of my pain is the piriformis issue and sitting with sciatica. I do get quite a bit of pain in the SI joint too at times.
