    Ditto.
    • Pain started 3/09
    • MRI on 7/09 shows Spondylothesis L5/S1 and disc herniation.
    • PT for 4 months, made things worse.
    • Had epidural shot 10/09 with no luck
    • Had a Mylogram in 11/09 for more testing
    • Took time to think if I was going to get surgery.......
    • February 24th is my date to be pain free.

Bioactive glass (bioglass) is a biologically active silicate-based glass. Its high modulus and brittle nature make its applications limited, but it has been used in combination with polymethylmethacrylate to form bioactive bone cement and with metal implants as a coating to form a calcium-deficient carbonated calcium phosphate layer. This layer facilitates the chemical bonding of the implant to surrounding bone. Products include Biogran (developed by Orthovita and licensed to 3i, Implant Innovations, Inc, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla) and PerioGlas (NovaBone Products, LLC, Alachua, Fla).
    I hope this helps.
    Hi justin,

I keep asking him quesitons but I may need to set another appointment with him. Also I have some information for someone named Gil that someone sent me. I think he is a new member. Thanks for any information you could give me. Carmen

I think your doctor was talking about the 510k FDA approval process. See this link: What Are 510(K) Clearance
    and Premarket Approval?

:thumpup:The AWGC (Apatite Wollastonite Glass Ceramics) used on me in 1995 for an Anterior Fusion L4-S1 has not healed.
I have discovered that I was one of only 22 patients the surgeon used it on here in the UK and it's use has been discontinued.
From my research I gather that its use was indeed limited but at the time of my operation surgeons were not governed by guidelines such as NICE (UK) as to what they could put into a patient.
Too late for me now as I wasn't told exactly what was being used on me, only that a 'bone substitute fusion' was to take place.
I had L2 - S1 revision surgery carried out on April 29th with a rod, screws and BMP bone graft and am in early recovery.
Hopefully this will prevent any further deterioration caused by an unhealed fusion of 15 years standing with migrated staples.
An interesting subject considering the advances that have been made in bone subsitute materials since I had my op in 1995 and also the safety restrictions that are now in place here in the UK?
    5 Lumbar ops:

    1983 Laminectomy L4/5
    1988 Wide Decompression L4/5
1995 Anterior Fusion L4/S1 with AWGC (Apatite Wollastonite Glass Ceramic) and staples. Unhealed
    2004 Dynesys L3/4
April 29th 2010 Fusion L2/S1 with rods,. 10 screws and BMP. Dynesys removed and decompression L2/3
