There are other options. A graft from your hip or even cadaver bone. I've read several times the pain from removing the donor bone lasts longer than most of the pain associated with the surgery and recovery.
My stepdaughter has scoliosis and underwent a 5 level fusion 6 years ago. Cadaver bone was used and the bone growth was perfect.
I understand there could be religious or moral reasons for not using cadaver bone, but it was donated by the deceased just as an organ donor donates a kidney or heart.
Don't let your surgeon bully you into something you don't want. Stand your ground once you make your educated decision. It is your surgery after all.
I'm sure you will research the heck out of this issue and make the best choice for you.

I would have no problem with it being used again.I was a little slow Fusioning last surgery no growth at 6mon.but complete Fusion at 10mon.I think when you look at the small percentage of non-union compared to the stats. in this report it's not worth the chance.

, completely pain free still!
Yes Dr. Blumenthal from TBI is my surgeon for my upcoming surgery.I'm having a hybrid surgery L4-5 ADR and L5-S1 Fusion on September 28th. I know I guess one can't always refuse to fuse.Since ADR at two levels is not covered by insurance.Though I'm completely ok with Fusion at the L5-S1 I have seen too many problems with ADR at that level.I'm confident with the proposed plan for my back. The only thing I'm still wavering on is the use of BMP-2 for the Fusion.I plan to talk with him in person on this. Will see.I didn't happen to catch your signature do you have Lumbar issues ?
