Default How does a Fusion fix a Pars defect at L5/S1?

I have a diagnosis of a pars defect at L5/S1. The doctor thinks this is what is causing my sciatica.

If a part defect is a fracture of the vertebrae, how does a fusion fix it?

In addition, what are the opinions on the AxialLIF Fusion Technique?

    Regards

A pars defect is a fracture of the pars interarticularis, not the vertebra. The fracture allows the vertebra to slide forward over the lower one. In our case, L5 over S1. The surgery fuses the two vertebrae together to stop movement. It sounds like you need to do much research before you agree to any surgery. I'm sorry but I don't know anything about the AxialLIF. I'm six days post-op from an anterior/posterior fusion w hardware. Good luck, do your research!

as far as axialif - all i know is that when i asked US surgeons about it, they cited problems w/ pelvic nerve injuries (in men, think impotence and the like). i do know that the overseas surgeons do it more, don't know about their complications so you'd want to ask very directly and bluntly.

Thanks for the replies. It turns out I have a Pars Defect and can't use an ADR at that Level. My only option is to fuse. Thanks for the info
