Iliac Crest Bone Graft Donor Site Pain After Anterior Lumbar... : Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques

Anyone know much about it? The surgeon I'm seeing favours autograft due to it's higher fusion rate, but donor site morbidity is a concern. They don't take great chunks like they used to, they scrape some out, but it seems it can cause long term complications.

Anyone have any experience with this?

If I was having a fusion, I would definitely use an allograft or BMP instead of autograft (self). I've spoken with many Spine Patients that have ongoing pain using autograft. Just my 2 cents...

Same here, Justin. I was happy that my surgeon used, as he put it, mashed up bits of bone spurs, etc. that he removed, mixed along with BMP for my two level fusions. So far it looks great, and I don't have to deal with extra pain in my hip.

A local surgeon said that he used bovine bone for fusions. No thanks....

Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things . Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!

    Hooch,

I don't know which is best, but for both cervical fusions my surgeon took a piece of my iliac crest. I had no complications and no pain from the donor site either time.

    Good luck, Jeff

I personally would never use autograft. With my spine surgery luck, never. I had BMP used for my Lumbar fusion and at least I don't have any issues with remedial pain nor non-fusion there. I'll take it.
