Jan, I don't really know if it is common to reinforce an already done fusion from the other side or not. However, I do recall the doc saying that it's a one time approach getting in there from the front and it made sense to reinforce that level while there because if anything ever did go wrong with it, they couldn't get to it again. Also, they were able to remove more of the L5-S1 disc from that approach that they previously could not get to from the posterior approach. With the rest of that disc removed, it will create a more solid fusion.
It's cool you have the option of going to CA in your motor home. You will still feel at home in your "home away from home".
