Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things. Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!

Hi Alison,
I was looking at your condition and think I am sort of in the same category as you.I haven't had any treatment yet but it is L5 -S1 where my biggest problem is.
I am waiting to see a Neuro for an assessment and evaluation and his opinion as to what might be done for me. I too am on gabapentin as well as codeine (straight up 100mg 3x) and T3's to fill in( I also find the gabapentin makes me feel weird like the time lapse-disjointed feeling you mention).I really don't care for it all that much but it manages the pain.
My Dr has mentioned sending me to PT but I'll admit I have doubts and it is kind of scarey to me.After reading your post I am really wondering. I don't think I want anyone putting me through any sort of program until I see the Neuro. What if their movements put further pressure on these already insulted spinal nerves.
I've been reading a lot and the common thread seems to suggest if it hurts( when talking about spinal nerve contact)don't do it!
I hope you are doing well.

Symptoms:Over 4 years progressively worsening severe leg pain/weakness in both legs, hips down into feet.
Diagnostic procedures: X rays ,CT scan,MRI's
Diagnosis: L5S1 disc gone. As of June 2010 begun to autofuse.L3 needs ADR. 5 disc levels further up bulging discs pressuring nerve. Could have surgical procedures to alleviate pressure.( I declined at this time)DDD. Some arthritis.
Meds: Narcotics/Neurontin for pain.Alprazolam. RX Muscle relaxer.
Core strengthening. Walking. Recumbant bicyling.
Yup, we sound similarly decrepit!
I've been on it for two years now and its amazing what you (and other people who have to live with you) get used to.
I would definitely go to PT, any amount of core stability you can keep is worth it. I tend to have 2 days after physio feeling rubbish but my core is improving and I water walk as well once a week. It is worth trying anything rather than surgery.
I'm in for a discogram on L2/L3 & L3/L4 next week to see what is coming from them. Not looking forward to it but got to be done. Take care.![]()
