Default How sick can you be and they will still do surgery?

I never get normal illnesses, no colds, no flu since I can't remember when. Years even.

I woke up with a sore throat a few days ago. Now I have laryngitis. I don't feel much worse than normal, just run down. We leave for Brazil in six days, surgery in ten. My hubby has been coughing and hacking for a week now. Not really a cold, but lots of icky stuff.

If I just keep to a sore throat, will they still do surgery? I am now paranoid....all these years of waiting...if I get tossed out of the hospital because of a simple virus, I will...well, I don't know, but it won't be pretty
Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things . Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!

    Katie,

I do know that different doctors have different criteria on this question. I went into my second surgery with a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and the surgeon was not concerned. However, I had only a simple cervical fusion; nothing nearly as magnificent as you're fixing to do. I'm guessing that you'll contact Dr P's office Monday? I'll be anxious to hear what he has to say.

It sounds like you've been sick for a while; and your surgery is not for another 10 days. If your not completely recovered by then, I'll bet you'll be well on the way to having mended.

    Good luck, Jeff

Katie, I think you will be fine come surgery day but I more than get the panic rising. In the meantime, here is what I would do to be proactive about my health: drink plenty of fluids, scrub my hands, down extra vitamin C, scrub my hands, wash all the bedding, etc in hot water, scrub my hands, spray lysol everywhere and wipe down the phones and doorknobs with it, and.....keep scrubbing those hands.

I know that you will think this is bunk, but eat lost of garlic! Get some real garlic from the store, cut it down the middle and roast it in butter or olive oil in a pan or about 12 - 15 minutes. Eat it twice a day and you can even mince some to put in some broth. I got over a cold in four days doing this. I also took Benadryl Allergy and Sinus along with this. Garlic and honey are natures anitbiotic. And RX anitbioitic won't work on virus anyway.

Getting a cold seems to very common before surgery. Wonder if stress makes you more susceptible? I've not heard of anyone needing to cancel so far so I am sure that you will be just fine.

The garlic would also help keep all the well wishers from getting too close!

Would the odourless garlic pills not work as well? I am loading up on good vitamins, etc. And I don't think it is bunk. I've heard that lots before, but never had to try it. Good thing I like the taste, but have never tried it in those quantities

LOL, yes the real garlic would have amazing powers that way....hmmmmm...some family in-law members may not like it either...ooops, did I say that out loud?

    Hi Katie,
Well I am 42 but I have a dear friend that is in her early 80's and she convenced me. Her father use to eat lots of garlic and he never had the flu. Anyway, I was on a vacation in Hawaii of all places last Sept. and on day three I was so sick. Congested, sore throat....Anyway, I was away from home. I didn't want to seek out a doctor. So I decided to try the garlic. I ordered it where ever I could. I took the Benadryl as directed and 4 days later I was soooo much better.
As for the pills, I guess it's better than nothing, but I prefer the real stuff.

I second the fluids, garlic, vitamins, and such. I would also take pro-biotics and eat lots of fruits and veggies, raw if possible or lightly cooked to preserve the good stuff in them.
