Icon5 Menstrual Cycle During Spine Surgery?

    Hi Everyone!

I am scheduled to go under the knife next week and I just realized I should have my period then

Are there any concerns that I should be aware of? I'm hoping not.. but, it just crossed my mind and I'm not sure - esp if using BMP is involved?

I hope not! I totally forgot about it!

    Thanks

You just need to let the nurses know so they can change pads. Apparently abdominal surgery causes menstruation anyway (not read research saying this but female nurses told me this post 1st spine surgery and it has happened to me each time)

    Alison~ Thanks so much!

I was worried that I made a too common mistake of overlooking one of the 'simple' things that could carry great consequence. Thanks for the info One less thing to worry about

Sounds more like a PITA than anything.. I read the thread with all 'must haves' (Thanks for that, too!) and saw the 'wand' to help wipe.. Oh dear..I wonder if they have a wand for this, too!! Duel function~ 2 for the price of one?!!

    Thanks again
Time to try and catch some I'm soo !

I hope you have a good day!

i had mine unexpectedly after my gall bladder surgery - but had been on the pill and missed doses.

stopped the pill before my ADR surgery and had my period, but no bleeding after surgery at all. i don't know of any reason that abdominal surgery would cause a period.... you have to have the usual hormone fluctuations to have a period....

Genn - no special worries, but as mentioned - you'll want to tell your nurse so they can help you out. don't know what Dr Bitan is planning, but i had a foley (urinary catheter) until the day after surgery. they likely wouldn't want you fiddling with tampons while the foley is in.

sorry it's timed as such - it'll be a pain in the belly to deal with!!! not terrible, but you wouldn't pick it for that time.

    Heyyyyyy Doc Thank you

Sounds like I'll have to pick up some pads and bring them with me- as to not have to bother the nurses too much. I'll have someone with me to help out and, give the nurses a break.

I'm pretty sure Dr. Bitan orders a foley. I'm know for sure soon!

No more Aleve as of today, which is the only med (naproxen) that touches my period pain. Oh well, I'll live!

Hopefully, there isn't a next time.. Or, at least until after menopause! LOL But, I will be more cognizant of my menstrual cycle when dealing with major surgeries.. Adding another discomfort on top of an already uncomfortable situation isn't exactly ideal

I hope the post-op pain control is good enough where I wont actually mind!! One can hope.. LOL

    Thanks again!

i know this is TMI for the boys... but i "scheduled" mine based on when i went off the pill.... as not to interfere. i was on an extended cycle pill (Seasonique) and could just do that.

since surgery, have had another birthday and am weighing my period and birth control options (ie, the 2nd isn't always a concern, but not sure what the future holds!) -- don't want to be on extra estrogen anymore b/c of family history and blood clot/stroke risk. ain't it fun being a gal...
