    Default Muscle Twitching

I wanted to know if anyone in the group has experienced a condition that involves muscle twitching. I've got a lot of trouble with my muscles or maybe it's the nerves. I don't know. Anyway, I'll be laying still and my foot or leg, hand or harm, and sometimes even my back will twitch or spasm. I'm not sure how else to explain it. It's very frustrating and can be really painful. The body part will actually move on its own.

It happens with my feet a great deal, especially my right one. After my foot surgery this past Spring, when it happened to my right foot and/or leg, it would be excrutiatingly painful because of the surgical pain.

This will happen to my lower back; when this happens my l my whole lower back just moves on its own. And this wakes me up from a sound sleep, because it is so incredibly painful.

Has anyone ever heard of this or had it happen to them before? I wonder what is causing it.

    Hi Danielle,

Muscle twitching is also called a "fasciculation." In most cases, fasciculations are benign. Below is from good 'ole Wikipedia:
A fasciculation [fə.ˌsɪk.ju.ˈleɪ.ʃən] (or "muscle twitch") is a small, local, involuntary muscle contraction (twitching) visible under the skin arising from the spontaneous discharge of a bundle of skeletal muscle fibers. Fasciculations have a variety of causes, the majority of which are benign, but can also be due to disease of the motor neurons.

    Justin-

I guess I will need to make sure that I discuss this problem with the doctors at the Mayo Clinic that I will be seeing in January. It's an annoying problem and it concerns me. I was thinking of things like Parkinson's or MS. I am hoping it's nothing to worry about.

    Thanks!

I would definitely bring it up, just to be safe; but I wouldn't worry about it, as it is probably nothing serious.

Kbear hope all is well. I have the same twitching in my lower back. The pain is almost gone since I was placed on Baclofen and on the TENS device we discussed in my thread. It really started bad after a few days starting the TENS. The twitching is annoying, and especially when I sleep. The lower bad muscles are still swollen and just a bit sore.
if all I leave with this surgery is the twitching, ill take it!! Let me know what your Dr advises though, so I can discuss it with mine. I will not see him until Aug 3rd.

My legs twitched for quite a while after both my IDET and ADR. I had one physical therapist ask me if I had restless leg syndrome (and what I felt was what I imagine RLS would feel like). It all went away after 6 months, but it was annoying while it lasted.

    Hi,

I had the muscle twitching too after my XLTDR. i would lie in bed watching t.v. and my arm or leg at any time would twitch. I didn't have pain from it, but it was soooo strange! Sometimes so hard to the point if I was sleeping it would wake me up. I have very few twitches now, but have had some really bad creepy crawly legs and feet at night.
I've been taking a Tylenol PM here and there just tp try to get some sleep. Hoping that's just part of the healing????

    Take care...it should get better,

    Jennifer

Narcotics do not cause delirium tremens. Bezodiazepines are actually the treatment of choice for alcohol-related delirium tremens (However, acute withdrawal from benzos can cause DTs). I thought I would just clarify that point.

    Danielle,

Did you find out why your muscles were twitching?
I just read this and I was thinking if it is hurting you it might be restless leg syndrome as KBear suggested.
But I also have twitches which will really bother me but they do not hurt. I suppose it is from the muscles being all mixed up from back problems. It happens fairly frequently with me. I also have bad 'charley horses" in my feet, legs or calves. Now, they hurt and usually happen at night when I am sleeping or early in the morning before I wake up.
Hope your muscles have stopped their twitching.
