Default No heat pad after ADR surgery?

Is it true that we should not use a heat pad after having ADR surgery? Just cold?

I won't pack my heating pad if that's the case. And will only pack a few Thermacare wraps, for pre-surgery. As heat is the one thing that feels good.

I've always been taught that with acute injury/trauma (elective surgery) that you should always ice the area. The theory behind this is that the injury site is inflamed and heat will "instigate" the inflammatory processes and slow healing and recovery.

However, after I had my 2-level ADR I used my heating pad here and there just to help my lower back to loosen up. I would say that you can use your heating pad, but it is probably best to avoid it in the short term and use it when you get home from Germany.

As always, ask the medical team rendering your spinal care.

Thanks Justin. I'll leave it at home, and ask Dr. B. or Dr. F-M. about using it after I get home.

I usually prefer heat, but after my discogram, ice felt so good. Ice usually hurts and makes me feel more uncomfortable, in fact just the cold weather really made my back hurt more. I'm so happy that it is warm now.

    Default Got a confession..

    Cathy,
I used ice for several weeks after surgery, then switched to the heat pad. I am still using the heating pad, even though I know I'm not really 'supposed' to. It is one thing that brings me instant relief (I have a really nice big burn on my back to attest for my over-usage), while I wait for pain medication to kick in, thus my naughtiness. Anyway, I'd ask the dr., as different dr's have different opinions.
    Best Wishes,
    Kathy
