When I was young I can remember people with bad joints, backs or otherwise, complaining about how the weather changes can affect their pain level. Some even said they could predict when a low pressure front was coming. I use to put this under the category of old wive's tales but here lately I'm thinking there might be something to it. While the extra-tropical storm was moving up the east coast this past week I could definitely say spine pain was worse. When it cleared, pain levels were much better. I have sort of noticed this over the last year or two but refused to believe there was anything to it. Now I'm starting to think there may be some truth to the tale.

    Anyone else notice this?
Low back pain became somewhat dehabilitating in 2005
Have had 11 steroid injections, IDET, Trial for nerve stimulator, PT, chiropractic trial, practically every med known to mankind. Discogram indicated three diseased levels with L5-S1 being the most likely pain generator. Post minimally invasive PLIF with internal fixation (titanium) on 12-28-09 of L5-S1. Doing better than expected. Last opioid 7/9/10. Five months pain free, then my neck turned against me. MRI on 12/1/10-- disease at C2 to C7. Only surgical alternative is to fuse entire C-spine. Diagnosed now with Aggressive Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis with cord & brainstem active lesions

Jack, I live in puerto rico so I watch the tropics very closely every year during hurricane season (I am something of a weather nerd), and followed that storm, and how it broke all the rainfall records in NC. I have also heard that myth but have never really paid attention to any correlation between weather and pain. I am going to try and see if I notice any changes in pain, as we have a couple of tropical waves on the way right now (which I hope don't interrupt my trip to Miami next thursday). However, my best friend had a fusion when she was 13 to correct scoliosis and she does say that when it's humid or cold, she can feel discomfort from the hardware.

Jack- I've always heard that and I can feel it too. I noticed that my pain is worse when we have rapid weather changes (which happens a lot in Texas). I think there is definitely something to it. Some of the old wives tales have actually been proven true, not sure if this is one of them though.

On the subject of wives tales, the entire time I was pregnant with my girls I had the worst heartburn, not just a little bad, like I was eating 20 Tums a day and was on Rx for it and was still dying. My kids were born with heads full of hair (hubby, I and all of our family were born bald- so not a family trait). There is a wives tale that women who have heartburn during pregnancy have babies with hair, and you don't know how many times I got asked if I had heartburn when people saw my babies. Anyhow, I was watching this show on Discovery Health and they do a True or False quiz at the end of each segment. One of the questions was True or False "Women who have heartburn have babies with hair" and it was True. Turns out the hormone responsible for heartburn is also the hormone that causes hair growth in babies in utero. I was pretty stunned to see it was actually true. I'm already predicting this next one to have hair too, because the heartburn is starting up already.
