Sorry I can't think of much. Is there any physio you can do on them, maybe do some work on them when you do your hydro?

I have now been diagnosed with problems in both ankles and am going for steroid injections in the next week or so to see if these can help settle them.
fasciitis
I have been seen a podiatrist for a while as I have plantar fasciitis (pain in heels) that flares up when I haven't been doing much because of my pain and then get back on my feet afterwards. This has responded well to the orthotics. However my ankles are weak because of the neurological problems in my legs (especially my left one). I went over on both of them back in the summer and have been struggling to stay walking. The ultrasound showed fluid around the ligament that goes over the top of the ankle (anterior talofibular), both the ligaments are thickened. The left ankle joint has problems as well.
They are taking an age to settle down from the pressure of the ultrasound (done new years eve) and I'm hoping to be able to wear shoes today. I'm getting some new altered orthotics to see if they will help a bit.
Any ideas of anything else I can do to help?

i'm not seeing physio any more, you only get a real short time with them on the nhs. I have been going to the pool in flip flops so could do sime hydro but the podiatrist says nerves are over the top of the ankle are really aggravated/sensitive and hasn't had a patient like me before so isn't sure what to suggest. he is a specialist orthopaedic podiatrist and has been very knowledgeable during my treatment.
Just a thought, but if you are walking differently because of ankle problems, I would definitely think that could cause spine pain. Kinda like how us pregnant women tend to over arch backward to compensate for our huge belly, which then causes us back pain.

Alison, when did your ankle issue start? I'm not sure I was aware of this problem...maybe this is the first you've mentioned it? Anyway, gosh, one thing on top of another. I'm sorry. I don't really have any advice, but I hope the new orthotics help. On another note: have you heard anything yet about a time-frame for your upcoming surgery? How much notice, typically, does the nhs give you on something like this? Thinking boutcha! Cindylou

I stepped badly and fell in it awkwardly in august, this led to me favouring the other ankle and I then twisted this one a few days later. i've been waiting for it to settle down and heal (it can take longer than a broken bone apparently). it however has been getting worse, more tender and painful.
all my chronic pain is buttock, leg and feet, I only very occasionally get acute back pain. I am walking oddly but that is mainly due to lack of movement in the ankle (I think). not sure what movement to try with them to ease things.
I checked on the progress of the waiting list and it's looking like march is the soonest i'l be given but it's far more likely to be April.
Hi Alison,
I'm not sure what will specifically help in your situation. However, I do have a question: do you happen to have a short leg? If so, this can be corrected with lifts (and, I believe, you mentioned that you are being fitting for orthotics).
Ankle / leg problems can most definitely affect one's spines and vice versa. The body is inherently connected; thus, when one's gait is affected, other parts of the body (ie the spine) compensate.
I hope your ankle starts to feel better.

I have been checked and they are the same. i was mainly wondering if anyone else with spine issues had problems with their ankles and if anything had helped. I haven't responded well to steroid injections before but that was in my spine so here's hoping this works better.
Fingers crossed then.
IT doesnt really sound like it is related to a spinal problem I see it often in my office and sound to be related to mechanical problems most of the time. try deep tissue laser treatment. A low level laser will not do much good. if you can get treated with one of the newer 10 watt lasers which really do work, you will get better. dont give up to soon on it. of course there could be another problem, so i could be wrong. doc
