Glad you're out of pain. That IS good! I think my back has also self-fused. I'm looking at it as bad and good. I have seen my older relatives shrink and then be in pain from other problems such as internal organs being squished and stomachs sticking out. There seems to be no good prevention for DDD. Hopefully someday there will be or at least an easy fix if not prevention.
    Diagnosis:
    Degenerative disc disease throughout spine
Generalized disc bulging with mild narrowing of thecal sac in L2-L3, L3-L4, L4-L5, L5-S1.
    Moderate spinal stenosis L4-L5
    Foraminal narrowing
    Recent compression Fx at T10,T11.
    Treatment:
    Spinal decompression 2007
Cortisone injection in lower back in 2010
    Relieved of pain for now
    Hope for ADR

oh.. maybe that's why I have a little tummy now!!! Never thought of that! Well surely sounds like a good excuse~ I do stay active and walk quite a bit so I don't feel that my internal organs are compressed by my possibly shrinking spine and I believe it's been shrinking for a number of years now so hopefully my internal organs have acclimated to any shrinkage!

Currently I know I'm happy with the autofusion of L5S1. Later how it will affect me or my lumbar spine ~ I can only hope for the best and deal w/whatever comes my way in the future as best I'm able. I think the chance of spineal shrinkage for me will come with my T-spine and scoliosis going there and osteoporosis in my lumbar spine.

I seem to now have more trouble with some other parts of my body.. like my feet and my bladder. The aging process is definately keeping me occupied with various little (or big) maladies..

Such is life~ I am truly happy at this point in time with how my spine is doing and how I feel or least I should say thankfully with the aid of one pain medication! Not so sure I'd be singing the same tune w/o it (pretty sure I wouldn't be in fact)!

Wishing everyone this much pain relief w/or w/o surgery
    injured low back in '82
L5 S1 bilateral discectomy and partial laminectomy '89
    L4 percutaneous discectomy '92
Failed surgery and chronic pain ensuing L4 surgery
    L3 anular tear
    S1 nerve root scarring
9 years of lumbar ESIs from 2001 to 2010
surgeries recommended but not had: 3 level global fusion
2 level ADR, Hybrid surgery w/ADR L4 and fusion L5S1
Currently L5S1 autofused after many years of no surgical intervention
    Feeling better!
