I just had a massage. My therapist is amazing. The key is to find a therapist that really has a passion for what they do--it will be evident that they are not "just going through the motions."

I had an awesome massage yesterday at the retreat I went to. The lady came to us and was very knowledgeable on spines and wasn't rough. I felt great during and after the massage. I'm definitely going to treat myself to pregnancy massages with her!

    Update:
No more massage for the time being. Working into the hip TP areas caused chaos at the L5/S1 auto-fusing site.
I found out that auto-fus"ing" does not mean auto-fus"ed".
Back to the basics again...but the pain has leveled out at a manageable level thank goodness.
I need to repeat "slow" and steady...over and over....
Doing core and stretches now just to keep from seizing up. Why is it SO hard to do nothing!?
I am going to start researching R & R techniques, that way I will feel like I AM being productive.
    What a life!

Hi Moni! So good to hear from you again

I have to address the weight issue and your worry about going into surgery with some extra. I had gained a great deal over the past five years...you know the routine...too much pain, throw in some depression...on it went in more ways than one.

According to the dear Dr. P, I was obese. Mind you, he is a marathon runner...'nuf said But yes, I was definitely overweight. The good news is that I have lost over twenty-five pounds since coming home, and it sure isn't from a lot of exercise. I believe that my metabolism had slowed down so much because of the huge amount of narcotics, and when I reduced them by 80%, my body started working a bit more normally. Now that I'm out walking, I'm hoping to drop the extra fifteen or so before Christmas. I can always dream ;-)

Just thought I'd give you another idea about those pounds....try to not be so hard on yourself or your goals.
Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things . Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!

Katie....As Usual you make me smile!! Thanks friend!
What is it with these drs?? a marathon runner!? Aforemention southern surgeon is a bicycler extraordinaire!! It must have something to do with early "have respect for your body" training...I missed that class I guess...I had a strong body and took it for granted, until Hashimoto's attacked me and I lost. An accident here and a bad fall there...pushing far beyond my limits just because I could.... Then age crept up and all the abuse I'd given it over the years started to show!
I have heard it said that it's never too late to start taking care of yourself...so I've begun! Sure and steady and back off when it hurts....I agree with the drugs slowing down the metabolism and with Hashi's I got a double whammy. Could be worse tho'! Some people can't walk!!!
I've cut my meds back to about half of what I was on and find that the pain makes me MUCH more mindful of what I should NOT be doing! The no bending ...no twisting....no lifting ...is THE golden rule theory for me now! Oh and NO MORE auto-pilot! That is dangerous in our spiney conditions!!
I'll keep dropping in from time to time! I actually went and hung out in the Lounge for a bit last nite...awesome pet pics!!
    Take care of yourself.
