    PT; multifidus muscle

    Hi Everyone,

I thought this article might be helpful as it explains about the importance of the MULTIFIDUS MUSCLE the deepest muscle of the lumbar spine.

This muscle is found to be dysfunctional in nearly all people with lumbar spine problems.

Scientists have now found that people that have strong and functional Multifidus muscles can have shocking looking MRI scans but seem to suffer no back pain.
Where as us poor spineys may have have recurrent back pain due to weak and dysfunctional Multifidi that are not properly protecting our spines the way they should be leading to abnormal disc and facet loading.

It may well be the missing link.

Ask your PT to explain more.

By the way, this forum is worth joining because of the smileys alone...hehe.

    Joel,

Thank you for this post! Since I am still dealing with muscle pain even after my fusion surgery,
I found this site to be very interesting.

My muscle pain is bad enough that if I even try to massage my lower back, I want to scream from the pain. As I was scrolling thru the diagrams, I couldn't help but notice where the massage therapist was doing massage techniques. The same spots where I have my pain
Disc Bulge C4/C5, Disc Degeneration T11/T12, Bi-Lateral tears L5/S1, Diagnosed w/ Lumbar Disc Derangement w/ Radiculopaphy. Treatment: IDET, Percutaneous Discectomy, SI Joint Injection, Facet Block. All failed. Empire BC/BS Denied Coverage for ADR-lost all of my appeals. MVP also denied coverage.

    Anterior/Posterior Fusion L5/S1 -1/20/09 - I'm not 100% but I'll take the 85%! When the weather co-operates, it's 95% woohoo!

    Hi Nairek,

My back has continued to play up since my discectomy 4 years ago.
And although I had done tons of pysiotherapy post surgery it wasnt untill this year that my new physiotherapist showed me this particular muscle on real time ultrasound and how atrophied and dysfunctional it was.
Apparently once it has been cut through during surgery or after continued pain it switches off and you have to rehabilitate and train it to work again or else the larger more superficial muscles work over time and get like tight steel cables while the deeper multifidus muscle deteriorates and stops protecting your spine.
It is not an easy one to rehabilitate but I have found although I still suffer pain it has helped a great deal and may even have stopped me from getting a fusion.
