I saw my spine specialist yesterday to make sure this strain problem I've had is purely muscular which he agreed with. It's been lingering since last August & although it's much better & I can do basic core work this new physio I've seen wanted it confirmed. I'm doing a bit better with my general fitness & am up to 4 mins on the cross trainer & managing longer walks. I noticed more of a step change for the better in the last couple of weeks so hopefully I can improve at a faster rate from now on - snow & ice permitting! I hope by the time I go for the 12 month review in April I'll be well on my way to a normal activity level.
It's very icy & snowy again here in the UKas it probably still is in parts of the US so I hope everyone is keeping safe & warm

I read on FB saying you had a foot of snow & saw on the news that the Manchester area had been heavily hit with it. It was just light snow fall round my way but it's not good walking conditions. I've still been out walking but have been the most careful pedestrian on the planet!!
I wonder what tomorrow's weather will bring though. It seems to be like this all week. Hope next week's weather is more spine friendly.
Has your pain spike settled much? Hope you've been able to have some settled nights' sleep since your other post.

Its meant to staying pretty much the same all week. The girls have never seen snow like it (apart from the alps!).Its rubbish for being able to do a little walk, could you go on the treadmill at the gym if it gets worse where you are?
I had a slightly better night last night but not managing to get comfortable easily or have a snooze in the day at all so its pretty tiring and time drags.

A friend of mine with a lung condition who can't walk outside when it gets cold goes to the shopping mall instead and does a few laps there. She also is able to go into the large sports arena and walk around the top of the bleachers (rows of seats). Would doing any of that help, instead of trudging through snow and ice?
Also, do you have the cleats that strap on to the bottom of your boots over there? They are made of rubber and slip over the toes and heels, and have spikes on the bottom to prevent slipping on the ice. You have to be careful to take them off indoors, as they are slippery themselves on tile flooring!

Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things. Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!
Thanks for the walking tips. We've recently had a new supermarket open where I live & I had thought about walking round there if things get worse. I was also wondering whether to buy some of those things that Dave mentioned on his post - Yaktrax, but didn't know whether to or not. They're on Amazon so I can get them over the internet. Dave certainly seemed to think they're good. I imagine they're similar to what you're talking about Katie. At the moment the snow isn't too bad but it's very icy.

Hi Ruth,
I'm glad that you are making progress, despite your muscle strain. I wish you the very best. Be safe on the snow / ice.![]()

Dear Ruth,
Hello! I know this thread has not been active since January. I hope you get this. I just read through the whole thing and find it to be VERY encouraging. I especially value the first post in which you state at 4 months post op your are STILL RESTING a lot. I am six weeks tomorrow from ADR at the same level as yours. I am resting a WHOLE lot more that I thought I would be. Your experience helps me physically and emotionally.
I hope you are well. This situation with your Mom is extremely difficult and I am glad you had somewhere to vent.Is this better? Are you in your own place yet?
Just wanted to say thanks for your frankness. I am also kind of a fitness buff. Your story will help me realize I will have to tone it down until I can handle it without harming my precious and fragile spine.
