Default daveinaustin's Surgery (L4-S1 Posterior Interspinous Fusion + Plating)

    Hello Everyone,

I wanted to pass along a postoperative update from daveinaustin (Dave):
Quick update: Surgery went well. The doctor discovered that there was micro-movement in the L4-5 fusion, which is probably be the causal factor. Also, he did the posterior spinal plate fusion L4-S1 to ensure solidification.
The above was in addition to the planned two-level posterior interspinous fusion using a custom CD HORIZON® SPIRE system by Medtronic.

Please keep Dave in your thoughts and prayers.

Justin, in general, not specific to Dave's case, how often would that micro-movement occur, and why? I will have to go back into Dave's signature to remember what exactly he has had done in the past, but I remember a few patients over the years worrying/complaining about movement in the joints when a fusion was done w/o taking out an ADR. Again, I don't remember Dave's situation at all, just wondering in general.

It all goes to help decide on my own choices down the road.
Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things . Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!

    Hi Katie,

Dave had micro-movement at the uppermost level (L4-L5) of a two-level fusion from L4-S1. Spine Patients with artificial disc replacement devices that necessitate a fusion "on top" of the artificial disc are concerned about continued motion (micro-movement) if the artificial disc is not explanted and fused in place.

    Rest well, Dave.

I hope Dave continues to heal up and press on as he has had a trying time of it. It is not my place to understand the great mystery but, speaking from experience, the trials have helped shape my desires to want to be available to others. Please let Dave know that it is our time to support him presently as he would do the same for any of us.
